  • QPR Will Receive £2.2m From Premiership

Championship Clubs Receiving 2.2 Million Next Season From Premiership
    Watford Observer/Frank Smith
Championship clubs to receive £2.2m from Premier League next season
    17th May 2010

The new agreement between the Football League and Premier League will result in Championship clubs such as Watford being paid almost £2.2m next season.
    - Chairman and chief executives of Football League clubs met at Walsall’s Bank’s Stadium last week to discuss the plans and decided to agree to the revised solidarity and parachute payments proposed by the Premier League.
    - Last season the base solidarity payment to all Championship clubs were meant to be £432,000 but it rose to £833,000 due to Birmingham City being promoted back to the top flight in the 2007/08 season. There was also a seperate payment made due to league position the previous campaign.
However, the new agreement means sides will now receive £2.187m but will not earn any more money based on league position or clubs being promoted back to the Premier League.
    - Parachute payments to clubs relegated from the Premier League will now be paid over four years instead of two.
    - For the last three years relegated sides received around £12m a season and that was set to rise to £16m this summer.
    - But now instead of around £32m over two seasons, the likes of Burnley and Hull will receive £48m over four years.
    - Relegated clubs will now land £16m for the first two years and then another two payments of £8m the following two seasons.
    - A Football League spokesman said: "Following a frank but constructive meeting at Walsall's Banks's Stadium, Football League clubs have voted to accept the Premier League's revised solidarity and parachute payments proposals.
    - "Whilst many clubs expressed concerns about the proposals, their acceptance was considered the only viable way forward.
    - "The Football League will now work in good faith, with the Premier League, to ensure that the resulting contract and regulatory changes are good for both competitions and football as a whole." Watford Observer

Thats Hooper in the bag, with change.

A worrying and short termist viewpoint taken by the Championship. These parachute payments run a real risk of effectively capping the premiership as the clubs going down will have four years worth of free cash to bounce back. Look what's happened this year. The pattern is already emerging that those that drop go back up and this will make it worse. All the more imporatnt to break back into the Prem quickly - it will get increasingly difficult with this regime.

Doesn't this mean that the relegated clubs get £12m instead of £16m a year and therfore less likely to bounce straight back.

2.2m will help go towards another year of vines, aygemang and helguson's wage, thanks gianni
I played sunday league football today.

Clearly I was the best player on the pitch.

I scored 5 and made 7 last ditch tackles.

We lost 5-0 but the rest of my team were sh it!

          No.

It was £12m a year for 2 years.

Now its £16m a year for 4 years.

          I think thats right.

          Madness.

If I were a relegated manager I'd take that over current system as you get a healthy free war chest (of £16m - bigger than our millionaires allwance to Colin) and you'd know you could spend it safely as you have a back up for the next 3 years. You can also borrow against it for an even bigger splurge to get you back up. This has removed any real; risk from an all out attack to go back up imo

Yes but to bounce straight back up you are looking at one season and as such they only get £12 instaed of £16m, longer term they will have more and possibly will stop them going into admin as they can't pay anybody.

I must admit I thought it was £12m a year for 4 years but if they just get an extra £8m for 2 years then won't affect anything.

Mate, the bottom line is that relegated clubs are ****ing lucky to get anything at all. Why should teams like Hull, Burnley etc be paid out for a toss season and getting relegated?

It's a bigger sum they can borrow against is the thing. Effectively a £48m guarantee to the banks. Any club would borrow against it and spend whatever iot took to get back up, where the new cash would pay it all off. This means there is very little risk from that tactic. Only fear of overstretching has stopped those that came down from the bounce back

it also states that regardless of league position or being promoted clubs wont receive anymore money that seems more worrying to me

Kingo it WAS £12m a year for the first two years but now its £16m, so forget £12m. Then for the third and fourth year it is £8m per year, so that is potentially £24m extra they will be getting. It WAS £24m over 2 years, now its £48m over 4 years.

I don't want to over egg this, but with an extra (free) £8m (let alone the rest of this package), we wouldn't be having a debate about whether we should aim at Hooper or Chopra, for example. We could afford both. And there'd be no risk in going for them Or we could bring players down from the Prem of course.
