  • Good read on Mackie

    Is Mackie's Exit Any Loss?
Is Jamie Mackie's departure to Queens Park Rangers a huge loss for Plymouth Argyle?

For a striker Mackie had a goal-scoring record of a decent centre-back, just 16 goals from 102 appearances for the Pilgrims', that kind of record is poor so the initial conclusion is that he will not be missed.

But Mackie's style of play isn't just about goals, his determination, enthusiasm and strong-running gave Argyle a focal point upfront last season and put the performances of other strikers to shame.
In just 18 months Mackie was catapulted from the Blue Square Conference league to become Argyle's number one striker in a relegation-doomed season, a big responsibility for a novice striker.

Former Argyle boss Paul Sturrock signed Mackie from Exeter City for £145,000 in January 2008 and played him as a winger for the early part of his Argyle career. It wasn't until this season that Mackie was used as an out-and-out striker and some cynics would argue that it was the lack of goals from Argyle's top striker that led to relegation.

The fee that QPR paid for the 24-year old is believed to be around £500,000, so after Exeter City receive their 20% cut Argyle will have made a £255,000 profit on one of their most prized assets and a welcome source of cash over the summer months.

But not so long ago Argyle prized assets were selling for £2 million.

Soon after he signed his four-year contract at Loftus Road Mackie appeared to take a parting shot at the inexperienced Paul Mariner, he said: 'I'm really excited to be here.
'I'm excited to be working for a top manager, who knows all about the Championship.'

It will be interesting to see if the other eight QPR outfield players will ever receive a pass from Mackie and former Argyle player Akos Buzsaky!

Seems people on here are quick to moan and #### him off but when a positive post is put up from a Plymouth site (who know alot more about him than we do) there is no response.

if mackie gives 110% each week im happy. people dont realise he will be playing in a better side than what he did at plymouth. he may not be our goal scorer but you know he will come young and hungry eager to impress. unlike likes of vine, agyemang, hall..
Soldier: "im on reconnaissance sir.. im looking for our camouflage expert.. have you seen him?"
      Lovejoy: "No?!"

all this is roger irrelevant till our main striker is unveiled in my opinion.
thats when we will know if hes a good purchase or not, cos if we dont get someone whos going to score from his work every other week, hes just going to be running around in no mans land like they say he was at plymouth.

I'm more than willing to give him a chance, and he does seem like a marmite player. What will swing it for me is whether he is like Ephraim. From what I've read about him there does seem to be similarities, and I pray to god he's something better.

I saw him once and was impressed, although I know once is never enough (just ask the ladies I have dated - take that as you wish!). He is the type of player who will be brilliant to play next to, and who will put a lot of pressure on defenders, forcing them to hoof it, which will then (hopefully) result in us having more possession. I don't think looking at bare goalscoring record at Plymouth is a fair thing to do, let's see how he does.

Someone in the thread says we should wait for our main striker signing, and I agree. People are moaning because this is the first one. It really doesn't matter what order they come in, as long as they do arrive!

IMHO this guy is going to run around and look more interested than that Dicckwad Agyemang so in my book he is better than what we currently have and a step in the right direction. Like I heard Warnock say and something key that our supporters constantly miss; I want to see 11 guys going out on the field in a hooped shirt giving there all. I want to see player hurt when we lose and player give everything for the cause. He is someone who I can categorically state will go out there and work his socks off for the team. He's not a Big Time Charlie, simply a honest, hardworking, enthusiastic footballer.
