Is Mackie's Exit Any Loss?
Is Jamie Mackie's departure to Queens Park Rangers a huge loss for Plymouth Argyle?
For a striker Mackie had a goal-scoring record of a decent centre-back, just 16 goals from 102 appearances for the Pilgrims', that kind of record is poor so the initial conclusion is that he will not be missed.
But Mackie's style of play isn't just about goals, his determination, enthusiasm and strong-running gave Argyle a focal point upfront last season and put the performances of other strikers to shame.
In just 18 months Mackie was catapulted from the Blue Square Conference league to become Argyle's number one striker in a relegation-doomed season, a big responsibility for a novice striker.
Former Argyle boss Paul Sturrock signed Mackie from Exeter City for £145,000 in January 2008 and played him as a winger for the early part of his Argyle career. It wasn't until this season that Mackie was used as an out-and-out striker and some cynics would argue that it was the lack of goals from Argyle's top striker that led to relegation.
The fee that QPR paid for the 24-year old is believed to be around £500,000, so after Exeter City receive their 20% cut Argyle will have made a £255,000 profit on one of their most prized assets and a welcome source of cash over the summer months.
But not so long ago Argyle prized assets were selling for £2 million.
Soon after he signed his four-year contract at Loftus Road Mackie appeared to take a parting shot at the inexperienced Paul Mariner, he said: 'I'm really excited to be here.
'I'm excited to be working for a top manager, who knows all about the Championship.'
It will be interesting to see if the other eight QPR outfield players will ever receive a pass from Mackie and former Argyle player Akos Buzsaky!
