  • 25 Years Ago today...

56 people were killed in a fire at Bradford City's ground.

YorkshireTV have never shown the film of that day since.
Maybe because of that, it doesn't have the same publicity that Hillsborough and Hysell have.

My son has just seen a tribute to those 56 people on SSN, and he never even knew about it. He cried a bit while watching it. And he's not a cryer.
We all sit in stands at football, and can only imagine what people went through that day.
I remember watching the news that night, in total horror at the images of that fire raging. And all those on the pitch, watching. Helpless.

Anyway... not sure what the point of this post is, but the piece on SSN was really moving.

R.I.P. to those 56 football fans.
Final Version - Hope you like it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1z0UQ0eqRM

      Terrible, terrible day.

Saw the whole film as part of a fire marshall course a few years ago, one of the most shocking and chilling things I have ever seen....

The speed of the fire was amazing.

      God bless them all.

I saw that film just a few weeks ago for exactly the same reason - you don't work for the City of London by any chance.

When the instructor put the video on he introduced it by asking who knew about it and I was the only person in the room who did. As Goddard rightly says because locally they chose not to play the film and because it was Bradford it doesn't get mentioned. But because of what has happened to the scousers we hear about it every year. Strange.

Let's hope we never ever see this happen in football or sporting arenas again.

I've seen the footage online, think it's on youtube. Remember the day it happened. Those that died should have been celebrating seeing their team win promotion, not fighting for their lives in a sporting arena. As someone states above it's shocking the speed at which the fire took hold. Read somewhere that one of the fire exits was locked and loads were trapped and died from smoke inhalation because of this. It's a cliche but it puts everything into perspective.
              RIP Bradford 56.

Yes they could. Search the film out online and watch it. It's a real eye opener and makes you think.

Started because of a cigarette dropped on a wooden stand with loads of rubbish built up under the seated area. Fans could get onto the pitch, yes, but many tried to get out through the stand and found that gates were locked.

If you ever get the chance to see the full film I would recommend it, though have to say it is very, very hard viewing. The whole stand went up in about 5 minutes, very scary for those of us who remember sitting in similar stands.
