The Venables team of 82/83 was far more akin to Sousa's tactics than ANYTHING free flowing. Not sure if many on here were old enough to recall those days but one of our most sung chants at the time was "offside offside, offside offside". TV had the offside trap working like a well oiled machine. Neill, Wicks, Fenwick and Dawes had it down to an art form. Especially at home on the plastic. Away game were far better to watch in those days. Functional but not pretty. Certainly not England 96 if anyone was hoping for that.
NB - the game when we sealed the title (away at Sheff Weds) we were booed off having suffocated the life out of the game and won 1-0 (Mike Flanagan!). Not saying it's wrong or bad.....but anyone remarking on Sousa being boring and defensive only needs to look back 25 yearsLast edited by Guest; 30-04-2009, 10:05 PM.

We did play the offside in the early days but we also played some pretty good stuff going forward too. Stainrod, Byrne, Allen, Curry all had plenty of skill. Hazel, Wicks and Roeder were very solid at the back and in 83 we thumped our nearest challengers at LR. I thought we won promotion against Fulham at LR but could be wrong. Perhaps I just remember the good times but scoring 4 up at Newcastle in 82 wasn't that boring for the 90 odd of us that went.RIP: Doug, Sniffer and Pat

It was a great team, as much due to Venables organisation and tactics as the actual players. But I agree with Jim, Marc and others that he has been out of the game for quite a time to be left in sole charge. Not sure him and Ainsworth really cut it. Agree him and Pearce or some similar combo wd be brilliant.
