Actually posted this on Scott Jones new forum but thought I'd post on here as I thought it was interesting....
Poster originally asked what £2.75m Mike Sheron would be worth in todays money which I found out to be £3609146.75
Then to make it more interesting
Rodney Marsh 1966 - £15000 = £190353.13
Stan Bowles 1972 - £112000 = £1033222.87
I then phoned up my dad to see if he could come up with anything and he said
...In 1972 we bought Dave Thomas for £165000 = £1522158.69, but here's and interesting fact my dad just told me. We only bought Dave Thomas because Celtic turned down a £250000 bid for Kenny Dalglish from us which was equal to £2306301.05 in todays money.
I think you'd go a long way to beat Les Ferdinand's VFM bought for £30000 in 1987 = £59000.00 and sold for £6000000 which is equal to £8064603.88 in todays money.
A few more interesting transfers Gianluigi Lentini (remember him?) AC Milan bought him for £13 million in 1992 equivalent to £18.8m.
Trevor Francis Britain's first £1 million footballer in 1979 = £3.5m
Diego Maradona: Barcelona paid £5 million in 1982 = £12.3m and sold to Napoli for £6.9m which is the equivalent of £15.5m in 1984.
