In 06/07, Sunderland lost their opening 4 matches (plus their Carling Cup game to Bury) and went on to win the division by two points.
With 12 games to go (like we are now), Sunderland were 5th having played two games more than the sides above them and 6 points off top spot. Despite their apalling start the most they were ever off 6th place was just 6 points. We are 9 points off the top 6 we not many games to go. Even when Warnock took Palace over the most they were off the top 6 were 9 points but he had 35 games to get them into the play offs.
Without sounding negative I think the play offs is not going to happen and its more likely that a Middlesbrough or a Blackpool make a late surge than we do. Three wins from 12 and we are safe. A win today and I might just change my mind but still the magical 74 points (which is the average points accummulation to get 6th) is 31 points away or just 22 if you are Cardiff. 31 points from 36? Unlikely.
