Sir Pie was saying on another thread that Nat Clyne was a realistic target but various Palace fans had laughed at the suggestion, saying if he had turned down Wolves why wd he come to us? It seemed a fair point but have just seen this report on why he turned down Wolves. Mainly it was due to fears of not being in the first team. He also felt loyalty to the club, but if the manager who brought him on was to take him with him, wd he feel the same? Here is the report anyway:
Wolves had a deadline-day offer of £500,000 accepted by Palace's administrators but Clyne himself declined the move, preferring to stay at Selhurst Park and McCarthy maintains that he understands that thought process.
"It was a speculative bid," he told the Birmingham Mail.
"But as far as I am aware they had accepted it. We made a bid when they were asking for money for players. It was Nathaniel Clyne that didn't want to come. And I understand his motives because he is a young lad.
"Firstly, he didn't know if he would get into the team. We've got Richard Stearman, Ronald Zubar, Kevin Foley and Greg Halford who all play there. They all know how I work and I know it was said to him, if you come and you are the best you will get in the team no matter how old you are.
"Second, it was deadline day. He is 18, he is playing in Crystal Palace's first team. He didn't know if he would play with us, his head must have been absolutely spinning. And I think, to his credit, he didn't want to let his team-mates down. That is what I heard. He has got a group of lads who are in a (financial) mess at the minute."
