Michael Chopra fined for being drunk and disorderly

CARDIFF City star Michael Chopra was arrested for being drunk and disorderly just hours after the club’s 2-0 defeat to Barnsley.
The striker went out with friends in Newcastle city centre following the defeat at the Cardiff City Stadium.
But he was arrested at around 1.30am on Sunday morning after police spotted him and a friend acting in a drunken manner.
The 26-year-old spent four hours sobering up in a police cell before being released at 5.40am. He was fined £80 for the incident.
A police spokeswoman said: “Two men aged 26 and 18 were arrested in Grey Street, Newcastle city centre on Sunday, February 21 at 1.30am on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.”
“They each received a penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly.”
Chopra is originally from Newcastle and was a product of the club’s youth academy.
He was sold to Cardiff in 2006 before moving to Sunderland and then returning to City just over a year later.
He has 17 goals to his name this season and is second in the club’s scoring charts behind Peter Whittingham.
It’s not the first time City stars have been criticised for being drunk in city centre bars.
In 2007 Robbie Fowler was blasted a “disgrace” by fans after being spotted “smashed” in Cardiff city centre.
The Liverpool legend was seen drinking with two fellow Cardiff players at Conti’s bar, in Mill Lane, before he’d even played a competitive game for the club.
And in November last year Ross McCormack was banned from driving for 17 months and fined £2,600 after fleeing a crash scene while over the limit.
The Scotland international ploughed his £40,000 Range Rover into a fence and drove off after a night out.
But he was traced after police found his personal registration plate lying in the road.
Chopra’s arrest comes just weeks after he punched a Newcastle fan during a game at St James’ Park.
He was watching his hometown club play Crystal Palace from the players’ box when the fan asked if he could have a photo taken with him.
As Chopra climbed down from the stand the fan asked him “what’s it like to play for Sunderland?” before spitting in his face and assaulting him.
The striker then punched him in the face leaving his own right hand swollen, before security staff moved in quickly to detain the fan and take him away
