  • Mentality

The mentality of this team and most others from recent years is very poor. As soon as we get within touching distance of the play offs , we go on a losing streak . The same thing happened when Warburton and Beale were both here, there were times when if we had won we would of got in the play offs or even gone top of the league but almost every time we choke and lose or draw. It would also explain the massive losing runs we have been on in recent years. In my opinion it probably stems from the hierarchy at the club and the lack of ambition transferring down to the coaches and players etc , hence why our players never seem to bust a gut , run and tackle hard , like a lot of other teams . What does everyone else think about this

I looked at some of them today when we went 2 nil down , they looked lost .
We need leaders and to be vocal .

I forgot to mention it is also why our Cup record is probably the worst in the football league because our mentality is poor and we struggle in one off important games.
Or maybe we are just a jinxed football club because of the Black Cat .

Half the team will be gone in May - is it any real surprise if some of them are half-assing it and treading water until May? It might not even be deliberate, just a case of their minds being on where they will be in August and how they will maintain payments on their houses and Bentleys etc. What city or country will they live in? You can see how they'd be distracted, particularly if the team was coasting in midtable with nothing to play for.

Anyway, we've got to sort out our recruitment and contract structure... we always need to have a situation where the bulk of the 1st team have skin in next season's game. The situation we are currently in should not be allowed to re-occur.

I'm sure Dunne knows what's on offer from Sheff Utd on the basis of being a free agent. We can make him an equivalent offer now to ensure to doesn't go into injury protection mode for the rest of the season. But I suspect he'll be looking to move on to a newly promoted side or one that will be genuine promotion challengers.

You'd think loan players would want to perform right to the end to impress their parent club, but if we dont start winning games soon the rot will truely set in as nobody wants to be in physio during the summer. Next season we really need a core of 15 players with a few seasons left on their contracts.

Unfortunately I can see the season fizzling out now, but Marti needs to motivate the players to get to around 60-65 points.

But yes, it's very frustrating to get so close, so often, and then fall away. I dont like managers drilling in his mentality that we need to get to 50 points to avoid relegation. Once you're nearly there it almost job nearly done. Marti should drill in that top 6 is where the expectation is.

I agree with you Sheep , managers should not be saying we just want to avoid relegation and lets get to the magical 50 points mark , even if they truly believe that . I think you should always aim for as high as you can get and this should be transferred to the players. Look what happened to Chelsea as a typical example , they started the season well and challenging for the title then their manager comes out in the media and says , no chance of challenging for the league etc and they've won hardly any games since and are struggling to qualify for the Champions league . Good but this shows how players feed off negativity.

We've been better with our backs against the wall that's for sure.

I would not blame the team but would blame the club for not having a winning mentality. We get to a point as we did in jan when things were looking up, so we needed to invest to push on.

But, as has been made abundantly clear by the club we don't have the funds to do that. The fact we have a new training facility and are keen to develop the stadium situation (it seems) shows to me the club are doing everything they can but ssimply can put that winning mentality in because we're hamstrung.

It's like any business treading water and stagnating because it does'nt have cash flow, employees are bound to lose interest no matter how well they are managed.

We're 'safe' this year, backs are not against the wall anymore, we'll get the results needed, it's not about survival, it's about ticking boxes as a professional football team. What the club should be doing is make some noise internally about our goals, hopefully they are.

Sure, but at the time they are cheap to lock in, they are an unkown? When they're a dead cert, and in demand ie Jimmy, they're pricey. What we really need is for Man City to win every case, change FFP, then bugger off to the ESL with the other untouchable clubs. FFP is a good thing but needs fairer implementation, we need to sake just a little bit of it, not all, to be able to have the money to compete to keep the players we want, and buy realistic targets for our level, that's to be able to do what you're saying i think.

I kinda like the whole scouring for talent bring on youth thing, but we'll be forever handicapped this way.

As far as mentality goes, i just want to the team to be pushing up the table, as they have been the last 3 months, for the next couple of months. That's what we should expect as fans.
