I just read that no contract talks are being held for many first team players that are free this coming summer. Cook, Dunne, Smyth, Kolli, Paal. Paal apart, I think tge other four are a valuable bunch for the team, being as a first team players or squad players. Bringing more non-British players to the club may help in longer plans, however, these players are typical Championship players and it will be a huge mistake to let them leave.

Cook will be 34yrs in April and according to Capology earns £30k a week, with our next highest earner Colback on half that at £15k a week.
As good as he's been thats a wage that isnt sustainable for us, and was one of the reasons why Begs left us I suspect (size of contract and age). If he left it could free up that wage to bring in two players. If he was prepared to bring his wages down to £15k a week then I be happy to give him another year.
I suspect Cook wont be renewed because we'll want to bring in younger players that might have a resale value, and that is our model now by all accounts. Morrison seems to have settled in well and Im not sure if there are any development players that could progress into the first team squad? I would imagine that "Spreadsheet Christian" will already be looking at the data for better value replacements for Cook.
It would be a shame to see Cook go because he's ever present and proper bloke.

When we merely activated Dunne's clause for +1 more year at the end of last season it was obvious there was a lack of long-term commitment somewhere. Whether it was from Dunne or the club who knows? But the fact no new contract came about as we finished the season on a high with peak levels of Marti Fever and optimism seems to suggest Nourry is content he can pick up cheap replacements for any player and wont get carried away chucking improved deals about.
Dont forget, the club HAS to offer terms that at least match the existing contract or the player can walk away.

If so yes, but otherwise with any player they don't have to offer the same exact pay at least as previous years, and any player out of contract can just walk away.

However, either way Jan 1st is kind of D-Day for club to have deals on the table for any player they wish to retain whose current deal is up this summer.
I suppose the ideal scenario is to not let players get to last 18 months of their contract - either tie them down with a new deal OR flog them. We seem to have been a bit too clingy and not ruthless enough in past few seasons though.
Simply exercising an option for an extra paltry year is pretty useless if we are ever gonna make money on transfers on a regular basis.

Apart from the five mentioned in my first post, there are also Anderson, Frey ... not to mention that Saito is on lone and cannot understand what else he must do to merit a contract! Cannot understand how we manage to give a four year deal to Dixon-Bonner and yet he never plays, while leaving regular first team players leave!

Obviously in the past we've made mistakes, Hammaleinen being the obvious one and possibly Kakay to a certain extent. However, I don't see them as financial or contractual mistakes - that was a case of our our coaching staff completely failing to notice that players they saw every day were not good enough. I suppose it takes a few years for the groundwork put in to the academy to filter through - hopefully we are starting to see the first crop of players coming through that might actually become bona fide first teamers. We can't afford to let them slip through our fingers by dithering over contracts for them or offering them #####y terms they turn down.

I'd assume some of it being held up might be because we need to figure out what division we are going to be in next year. Can't give some of those players mid to top end championship money if we are in league 1.
I feel there will be more confidence in the team to be staying up and we might see some of these contracts shored up in the near future.

Yes, he will be behind Varane, Madsen, Field and Colback in the pecking order but he will still get minutes and hopefully develop. His wages will be tiny and not much of a burden. Should his development stall, his wages would not be off putting to a L1 club taking him on loan. Similar story with Kolli and Lloyd... they should be getting deals.
