  • Cannon

Not much is said about our American wing back Cannon. He was not in our first two games squads. I read that recently he lost a Court case were he is due to compensate his ex-club over a million pounds.

The sad thing about the Cannon court case is that he isn't the only one that has to compensate Boavista. QPR is liable to pay some of it. The media articles about the court case do not specify how much we shall cover, but as the compensation he has to pay to Boavista is more than a million pound, our part might be significant. If we have to pay half of it, it is big money to us.

I think there are two potential versions of this story:

    1. If Cannon has withheld information to QPR at the time he signed, which has led to this compensation or fine becoming a surprise to the club, I understand that he is kept out of the squad for the last two matches. I hesitate to believe that QPR has willingly broken transfer rules. It could of course be a legal grey area that QPR went into with eyes open, fully aware of the financial risk, but knowing our financial situation in September last year (when the deal was signed) I doubt it. If the court case was concluded in the 23/24 season, it could have pushed us over the FFP limit and caused points deduction or other penalties. We might count ourselves lucky that the case was only concluded now, when we are into a new financial year, with much more FFP headroom. The fact that a transfer has backfired the way it has says something about the quality of the people at the helm at the time.

    2. The other version is a more positive one: . It could be that QPR took a calculated risk, and that the parties knew at the time that any compensation to Boavista by QPR (lets call it a transfer fee) would only be determined through a court case that would not take place until the 24/25 season. In such case, it might not be any mismanagement of anyone involved, but a clever transfer where the transfer fee was postponed by a year, to better align with FFP limitations.

However, whatever is right, I don't think Cannon is part of Martis plans. If not, we would not have signed Santos. The problem is obviously that Cannon has three years left of a four year contract. While I would not compare it to the Richards situation, it has some similarities, in that he is a highly paid player that isn't part of our plans and might have a tainted reputation after this court case. It can be hard to get him off our books.

According to Transfermarktt he is valued at €2m, but I honestly think anyone that want him for free will get him tomorrow.

It's not a transfer fee. It is compensation for breaking a contract. We did have an insurance in case this happened. It's going to be a case of how the player is going to pay his amount.

How long has this been going on? When did it become known? I can't remember last time Cannon played - I recall Jimmy Dunne at RB against Leicester in March so it must be a while ago. Whatever, it sounds like a right bleeding shambles! We do seem to have a knack of picking them (or do all clubs have players going MIA?????).

If he was still under contract when we signed him that should have been obvious and the FA wouldn't have approved our registration. At the time we signed him he had to be a free agent..?

I don't know anything about the case but I would guess Cannon has breached the terms of his release from Boavista?

We cant sign players still contracted to another club. Nothing much for us to be worried about here imo.

Well the lack of a competent right back does play on my mind a bit.... Cant make a definitive judgement about Cannon's ability, didn't see enough of him but I'd much rather have him available for selection than sitting in some sort of contractual limbo on the sidelines.

Yeah, Cannon’s been a bit of a mystery lately. Missing from the squads and now dealing with a big payout from that court case.

It seems we have to pay a fine of USD $71,000

Can we pass that on to the EFL?
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

If the EFL and fa sanction a transfer as legal if of thought only way we would be in breach of contract is if we haven’t paid him or them money owed if cannons walked he’s in breach not the club

wouldn’t mind if he was worth 70k but he’s pony

I thought he looked the business when he first came, then he disappears off the face of the earth.
