I was delighted to receive the recent news about Ishan Saksena becoming the new Chairman of QPR Holdings and the Mittal family increasing their stake in the club. I hope it heralds the beginning of a new and exciting period for our great club for two reasons. First, the increased interest in the club held by the Mittal family will hopefully mean funds can be made available to bring in some good signings, rather than having to rely solely on loan players. I believe the Mittal family’s wealth and Amit’s affection for the club should promise us good fortune. Secondly, having had the pleasure of meeting Ishan, I think we now have a Chairman who has great intelligence, experience and professionalism but who is also a gentleman. My brief experience speaking with Ishan left me with an impression of a man who respects the opinions and views of ordinary fans as well as wealthy backers. I think he will be a listening as well as a creative and pro-active Chairman.
It was especially good to hear Amit say the fans are the real owners of the club. That signals a breath of fresh air in contrast to some of the less favourable remarks about the people who make QPR what it is that we have had in the recent past. Combined with the new professionalism that I expect we will now see in the way in which the club is run, whilst letting the manager and players speak for themselves on the football field, I think we can all enjoy a deserved fresh optimism about our club.
Having had the privilege to serve as a Director of QPR, I am well aware of the difficulties involved in running a football club. I hope we can all wish the new Board the best of luck, and show some patience towards them as they begin to set out how to take us forward. They are of course right to say the immediate priority is to turn results around on the pitch and secure QPR’s championship status.
