I read a report in mail online about Stan and Don Shanks described him as the Lionel Messi of the 70's and when you think about it they were very similar players, great left foot with a brilliant first touch , great dribblers and would very rarely lose the ball , always find another player with a great pass and scored lots of goals by just passing the ball into the net.
Yes Messi was 10 times fitter than Stan and probably more dedicated but Stan had little protection from the refs like nowadays and the pitches were mud heaps . The 70's were great days with great players and mavericks like Stan before the Premier league came and made it all about money .

Got a story about Stan that my uncle told me .
My uncle was mates with Don Shanks and also got friendly with Stan . Shanks mum used to live in the flat below my Uncle in Batman close on the White city estate
One Chrismas day my uncle, Don Shanks , Stan and Ian Gillard were on the #### , anyway they all ended up at my uncles house drinking till 4am . They would'nt of got much sleep or even sobered up before our home game against Spurs on the Boxing day and i think it was an 11-30am kick off. We drew the game 2-2 but Stanley missed a penalty.
I can remember my uncle telling me this story and i was annoyed with Stan because if he had'nt been on the #### we might have won the game . Little did i know that most players were doing the same for years and it probably only changed when foreign coaches got involved in the English game and changed players drinking habits and diets . Any way just a little story my uncle tol me about Stan , he did tell me a few others but not for here.

I missed out on seeing Stan by about a six years unfortunately but of course have heard the stories, seen footage etc. An incredible player. When I think of maverick type players from that era the two I think of straightaway are Stan and George Best. He was that good. If I could go back in time a little would have loved to have followed the team during 1975-76. Must have been an amazing time to be an Rs fan.
The word iconic is used a lot these days but is more than justified in his case. Can't think of a single player like him at the moment. Mavericks sadly do not fit into the modern game which is a real shame.
Made me think just what a time that must have been. When you think of teams who achieved what should have been the impossible since then only ones I could come up with are Leicester and maybe Blackburn and their respective title wins, albeit latter had to splash some cash to do it. For us to have come so close to winning the league was one hell of an achievement to say the least.
RIP Stan
