  • What comes first: New DOF or new manager?

If the recent polls are anything to go by, 80-90% of fans want to see Ainsworth gone. I bet many fans refreshed Newsnow every fifth minute after the Blackburn match, to see who our new manager would be. However, after a week, there are no signs of Ainsworth leaving and a new manager coming.

I am not surprised. My take on the situation is simple: We will employ a new Director of Football before we employ a new permanent manager. I do not rule out a caretaker manager for some weeks, but a new permanent manager won't be signed during the next few weeks.

The reason is obvious: Any attractive manager will not sign for a club that will get a new DOF in the near future. It is well known that QPR is conducting a search process for a new DOF with the help of an external recruitment company specialising in sports management.

The role of the DOF is to set the direction of the club and define the philosophy and style of play for the entire club (from the first team through to the academy). The prime responsibility of the DOF, after having worked out a strategy and a plan, is to appoint the right manager (and the right head of the academy and the scouting unit). Attractive managers will not sign for a club some weeks or months before a new DOF arrives, risking that the new DOF will decide to go in a very different direction than the manager.

The relationship between the DOF and the manager is more important than any other relationships in a football club. If they do not share the same view on how to play football, the cooperation will never work. A manager with no other options might accept to sign for QPR without knowing who will be DOF, but a serious, attractive manager won't. The owners understand this, and are now putting maximum focus on getting the DOF onboard. They do not spend much time on thinking about a new manager.

Hence, I think we can drop throwing names around for a vacant manager role right now. It is all about waiting for the new DOF. Once he is appointed, and we learn about his past achievements and his thoughts of how to develop a football club, we can revisit the speculations. Then we will understand what manager-profile he is looking for.

I see that some fans are of the belief we do not need a DOF. If owners would be super-competent football people, we might not need a DOF. Good old Jim Gregory knew a thing or two about football, and was chairman and DOF in one and same person. But Amit and Ruben are not in that league, so please put the idea about a club without a DOF to bed right away. It would be a wreck less decision.

Its four months since the search for a new DOF started. I think the process is quite advanced right now. However, I can imagine it isn't easy. Lots of persons would love to be DOF for a known club like QPR, but once understanding the financial constraints, the best candidates will start hesitating. The chance a new DOF will face relegation in his first year is high, which will make a financial difficult situation even harder. My hope is that there are many very competent DOF candidates out there that see this as a fantastic challenge! If a DOF can organise a solid comeback for QPR, taking us back to the upper half of the Championships, he will be able to move on to larger clubs and bigger budgets!

I think you are right for the most part but if the club is up for new ownership it's important to consider what is being sold, the current concern or an ongoing one? Would new owners just want to install their own choice in the role anyway, same for coach?

Could be that we are in a holding pattern all season long, and could be exactly all GA was employed to do anyway. Spend no money, keep us up.

Would rather a new striker than either of the 2 choices stated above!! But I take your point. I actually think GA is making this look a lot harder than it is. We have pretty much the same if not better players that beale had when we were top of the league. Let's get back to keeping the ball, build the play, get players like chair and willock playing with a smile on the faces instead of being asked to hug touchlines, hit long balls, win tackles etc. Pick a system and get the ball on the deck and allow these lads to express themselves. Forget the emptying the tank crap, play with some style, get lads to take players on, show off, do tricks, entertain.

we have lads who can play! Paal, smyth, Armstrong, chair, willock, even colback and field can pass, run, turn with the ball, shoot. We seem too scared to get our heads up and just play. I think the manager is so determined that they just run and run until they fall over it has taken all the focus away from what these players are capable of producing. They didn't get to this level by running around like headless chickens, give them a hug, encourage them to get on the ball and go out and play like they did when they were young lads starting out. QPR have always played good football. Let's get back to it. COYR'S.

The price of the club will depend on what league we're in. This is the last year of a very difficult 3-year FFP. If a takeover hsppens before Jan, it will have to include some way to create funds in Jan. Personally, I dont see any takeover until out fate is known.

I think GA will be given more games and this Board will replace him if needed. There doesnt seem any point in bringing in a DoF to develop initatives that may not be aligned to those of new owners.

Maybe a good DOF can make this club a better "asset" for a buyer? Just an alternative view from me ...

I think getting a new manager in first is important, Bhatia should be already talking to candidates now imo.

the DOF (or whatever the position may be called) ideally should be in place by the beginning of January, especially as it would allow us to start beginning recruitment in time for the summer, this will be important especially given that our FFP concerns will be eased, and the fact that a new TV deal kicks in for the EFL so we would get more tv revenue as well.

When Gordon Jago laid the foundations for our best ever team carried forward to fruition by Dave Sexton and Gerry Francis and then Terry Venables we had no need of a DOF nor did Alec stock with his double promotion and league cup winning team.
So put me in the heretics camp.
The concept of DOF was invented by clubs to put successful but superannuated managers on boards as a reward with their role being to impart their alleged manifest football nous to the what would become the role of coach

Surely we had a DOF back then. He was called Jim Gregory.

                  Hi Oslo
                  Precisely
He was the chairman who appointed the MANAGER whom he trusted to run the show. There was no middle man to supervise someone called a coach.
Gregory would sanction the purchase of a player the manager wanted

During Gerry's first stint ,someone on the board thought it a good idea t bring in Marsh and Gerry was not having it and it was drooped
