Those intending to travel to St Mary's for the visit of Queens Park Rangers should be aware of potential travel issues getting into the City Centre, with not only road works, train strikes and cruise ships causing congestion but also Southampton Pride weekend.
The last train from Southampton to Waterloo on Saturday evening will depart Central Station at 5.45pm, for home supporters this perhaps not be an issue, with the shortest walking route to the station being 1.3 miles and 26 minutes, but for QPR fans it will be longer as they will be directed via Britannia Road can expect to add 5 minutes to their journey.
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.
Game will probably still be in progress at 5:15pm with the new added time stuff. Dunno what the egress is like at St.Marys but I'd imagine it'll take several minutes to get out afterwards plus fans of my age invariably need the loo before heading off. All sounds a bit precarious in my view.....
In all seriousness, no way would I ever rely on a 5:45pm train to get me home from any match. I'd find another route or mode of transport or swerve the match.
Feel free to turn up at Southampton Central after 1745 but I can guarantee that SWT won't be holding the train for a few stragglers
I’m not talking about a few stragglers .. I’m talking at 100s . Everyone I know is getting Train and there is no way the police going to leave us in Southampton . They will want them gone
I can remember going to Southampton, 1st game of the season following our 2nd division championship and losing to Spurs at Wembley.
When we got there, the away end was sold out, so we sneaked into the home end. Total chaos and didn't see much of the game; but I remember trying to get into our escort to get back to the station, and OB thought we were Southampton fans, as we came out of their end, and therefore wouldn't let us join the escort back to the train.
I think we got to the station before the escort, as we had running battles through a housing estate on route: felt like the Mogadishu mile
