  • Alternatives to penalty shoot outs

Over the years I have mulled various options, reduced numbers, no keepers, no handling by keepers etc. I am sure we all have our ideas but how about no offsides until the 18 yard box?

If a game ends all square, they should have a " birdy song" dance off!!
( obviously I'm assuming, this wasn't a serious post to start with?)

Penalties do sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Just compare the way Messi scored his in shootout to Kane's. The former was calm and composed and stroked the ball in, and the latter just smashed it hoping for the best.

It creates drama and i doubt players would want to play more after extra time due to the risk of injury. Its a test of skill and composure so im fine with penalty shootouts.

I remember when FIFA fiddled about with "silver goals" and "golden goals" and it was rubbish. Imagine there'd never been penalty shootouts and games were settled by say, golden goals. 95% of people would be clamouring for some other way of settling matches and vast majority would agree that a penalty shootout would be fantastic and preferable.
I've been involved in a few "bowl offs" in cricket down the years (5 players bowling at unguarded stumps - no batters there). Amazing how many bowlers can't hit those stumps when the pressure's on. These sudden death "shoot outs" are a measure of skill, character and cajones. I feel they are a perfectly legitimate way to settle a tie that's failed to produce a winner after a LOT of ordinary play.

Spot on, then corners., the most attacking team wins.
I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

Get the biggest player from both teams and put them in the centre circle for a straightener ,winner takes all.

it took them 100 years plus to decide that the keeper should not handle a back pass from his team and longer to decide kick off did not need to go forward, plus changes to goal kicks leaving the penalty area. Off topic, can someone explain to someone who was born in the 1940s the rationale of not flagging immediately for offside. It worked well ab initio
