I agree , the game seems to have got overly complicated for most teams, who don't have ball carriers, and most players will look for the easy short pass sideways, which doesn't apply any pressure on the opponent's, remember when Greece won the Euro's back in the day, it wasn't always pretty, but it was always progressive, albeit going long most if the time, yet the so called pure teams couldn't handle it, get it up there, if it's in the opponent's half quickly then the pressure will tell in the end

When Bassett ran Wimbledon route 1 worked really well for a side very technically limited and they defied the odds for years and won the FA cup. None of the other teams liked playing them.. The pundits hated the offence to the 'beautiful game' and made jokes about visiting the ball in the hospital etc. Bassett was doing what he had to do with his resources- their gates were among the lowest ever for the top tier' It did not last because the stalwarts including Guy. Wise ,Cork and Sanchez etc could not be replaced.

The pass the other side to death across the back line started with Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and became emulated because that team did quite well even though it was murder to watch. It was assisted with other teams initially laying off and leaving them to it but latterly they now press much more and if the tippy tappers are not that gifted possession, is lost in dangerous areas. We have suffered from that

When I grew up in the fifties. everyone played 2- 3-5 and 4 and 6 wing halves automatically marked the respective 8 and 10. the inside forwards The Europeans played 4-2-4 and was adopted here- this became 4-3-3 but all the time the number of forwards reducing as fear of defeat took hold. One could never have envisaged only one up front and now even zero.

The very salient point made by the poster above is that the further the ball is away from your goal the better. So be attacking to the extent your abilities allow and bypass midfield if necessary.

IN my opinion the biggest loss for us at the moment is Amos

When Willock and chair play they play in close triangles often on the edges of the penalty area creating a lot of space on the edge of the area in the centre - the important goals amos scored last season was when he arrived in the box late into that central space , when he doesn't play none of Johansson , Field, Dozzell have that box to box engine they are more strollers!

An attacking Box to box midfielder is a must in our system - a gavin peacock , stuart Wardley akos Busacky , Luke Freeman type player
