How do we feel about him now ? Going into the last year of his contract next season , should he be offered a new deal now ? Arrived on a free transfer, has played every minute in the championship this season , I think I read he is the only outfield player in the league to do this .Dieng and Dickie have received all the plaudits but he has been a mainstay in our defence all season . I know he is prone to a brain fart every 10/15 games but he is ideal in a back 3 , good defender and comfortable with the ball as well .

Glad you have posted this. For me he is massively overlooked/ under-rated by some of our fan base but I honestly think he has been one of our players of the season. Think he has been tainted in some eyes by our dodgy defence of the year before but he excels in a 3 or a 5 however you look at it, and is one of the main reasons we are now able to play it through the park. He has made a couple of howlers lately but given how much he has played, hardly surprising. Another goal-saving tackle last night and he has been doing that all season. Probably one of our most accomplished centre halves on the ball since Matt Connolly or even Glenn Roeder. And we got him for free! Think he, Dickie and Jordi (if he can remain fit) are a really strong centre three, and with a new right back and Wallace on the left that would be a really strong platform to build out from next season.

I have always said as part of a back 3 he is a decent defender in this league - nearly all players especially defenders - at this level are prone to a shocking error 2 or 3 times a season.
Barbet deserves a new deal not only for his performances, but we are not likely to get a better defender on similar wages on another free transfer and any budget we have must be used to try and sign Johansen, Austin and Field rather than a replacement CB.

He might have been a free transfer but I'm guessing he's on high wages, high for our budget I mean. There are two options:
a) Today, offer him an extension of 2-3 years on more or less his current wages, maybe a small-ish hike if we can afford it.
b) Do nothing. He plays out his contract and then he probably clears off next summer but possibly re-signs on a new deal, who knows?
I favour (a). If he accepts it we have some sort of stability/commitment/continuity for a few years. If he doesn't accept it we all know where we are, and we revert to (b). However we then have 12 full months to sort out a replacement, either from within or by buying one.
To be honest, if there's any money sloshing about I'd rather tie down Dickie and Dykes to longer improved deals - these are players who will be worth £150milluion at some point in the future. This is not a criticism of Barbet.... I'd be happy to retain him. It's just a recognition we cant afford to keep them all well paid and content so there will have to be economies made in some cases.

To be fair to Barbet he’s a good pro no tantrums when Cameron got captaincy he’s just got on with it
hes helps Dickie imo first season in championship they work well together and with jordy a bit sick note you need reliable in defence. As stains said he’s got a oh my god moment but he’s got a odd goal in him as well so give him another deal imo warbs likes him he likes warbs why waste cash when he does a good job
