Huddersfield Town are one of a number of clubs interested in signing QPR defender Niko Hamalainen when the transfer window reopens in January, a report from Football Insider has claimed.
Hamalainen is currently out on a season-long loan with Kilmarnock, and has made a total of 16 appearances in all competitions for the Rugby Park club, helping them to fifth position in the current Scottish Premier League standings.
It is thought that Hamalainen’s impressive performances during his time on loan with Killie have attracted the attention of Huddersfield, who are said to be keen on doing a deal for the left-back in January.
The Terriers however, are not alone in their interest in Hamalainen, with Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, and MLS side Los Angeles FC – who the defender spent time on-loan with last season – both also reportedly keeping tabs on the 22-year-old.
Since joining QPR in 2014, Hamalainen has made just six appearances in competitions for Rangers’ senior side.
Hamalainen’s contract with QPR is set to expire at the end of this season, and it is thought that the club would rather cash in on him in January, than allow him to walk away for nothing in the summer.
The Verdict
This is an interesting one.
There is certainly an argument that Huddersfield could benefit from adding to their options at left-back, particularly when you look at the make-up of their squad already.
However, given Hamalainen’s apparent lack of experience at Championship level, you do have to wonder slightly whether he would be the best fit for the Terriers, especially when you consider the willingness another second-tier side, QPR, have to let him leave.
Even so, with Hertha Berlin also said to be interested, it may be hard for Huddersfield to win this race anyway, given the chance of first-team football the German side can offer him.
