I'm sure he got a nice increase to his wages so he got what he got. No player has any divine right to expect to play, especially a GP where there's only one space. Regardless, no matter how good we know Smithies was, why would they dump a keeper who helped them win promotion just because they sign another?

I expect Smithies was told he'd come in and they could compete for the shirt, but as mentioned above, Etheridge has been one of their best performers all season, so shy would they drop him? They just had reassurance in knowing they had a capable back up if needed.
