  • The Importance of Martin Rowlands?

As we head towards the end of the season and the opening of the transfer window the talk of new signings gathers pace. Throughout the various messageboards users post their starting XI's for next season with many of them missing one man - Martin Charles Rowlands. Of course everybody is entitled to their opinions and their views are often based on what they've seen or read that season but how important is our skipper?

    This season:
    Played: 43
    Won: 15 - (34.9%)
    Drawn: 15 - (34.9%)
    Lost: 13 - (30.2%)
Goals for: 41 (0.95 goals per game scored)
Goals Against: 41 (0.95 goals per game conceded)

    Without Rowlands:
    Played: 19
    Won: 6 - (31.6%)
    Drawn: 6 - (31.6%)
    Lost: 7 - (36.8%)
Goals for: 17 (0.89 goals per game scored)
Goals Against: 22 (1.15 goals per game conceded)

    With Rowlands:
    Played: 24
    Won: 10 - (41.7%)
    Drawn: 9 - (37.5%)
    Lost: 5 - (20.8%)
Goals for: 25 (1.04 goals per game scored)
Goals Against: 19 (0.79 goals per game conceded)

When Rowlands plays we have a higher win %, a lower defeat % as well as a higher goals for and a lower goals conceded.

One man doesn't make a team but for someone who was supposedly having a "bad" season he certainly has an influence on our performances with and without him. Since his injury against Derby we have won just 26.6% of the matches compared to 41.7% when Rowlands was in the side and are losing at a ratio of 1 in 3 compared to the 1 in 5 when Rowlands was appearing. Also not to be forgotten are his two strikes against Wolves and Norwich, which were the difference between two draws and two wins. Whoever takes over I urge them to pick Rowlands make him skipper and let him lead by example as he always does.

Your stats baffle me. It's the same kind of bafflement I get when report is on 24/7 news patrol. Good job.

Perhaps many have ommited Rowlands, because he is injured and if previous ACL injuries are anything to go by, he wont be featuring much, if at all in 2009.

It is usually a 9 month healing process and he got injured in January, so is not likely to be near to fitness until sometime in October at the earliest.

Said before, and was shot down at the time that Martin Rowlands was much more important than we thought.
Even if on the surface of things he was having a bad game, he was a great captain.

How can you say that??? Remember everything is Sousa's fault!

Rowlands is a great player and am continually shocked as to why people rate him so poorly.

                            Brilliant skipper!

All about opinions but he is better than Mahon and Leigertwood so until we sign a couple of central midfielders better than him he shouldn't go anywhere. If we had of signed Ben Watson last summer by now Rowlands would have been looking for a new team but it didn't happen and it looks a long way off before we sign someone of the quality to replace him.
