The club really need to make some kind of statement......
No they don't have to make any kind of statement. He has been sold at a good price and wanted to go.
Depending on who you believe the money will be used to either pay off some debts or to finance incoming players. Either way I don't have a problem. The owners are rich the club isn't. Why should they spend ridiculous amounts of their own money?
The club is in a stable position performing above it's station as a small Championship side. Are things really all that bad?

You could say the same about Chelsea, Man Utd etc etc. None of the clubs are rich but the owners are. The difference is, the rich owners of these clubs do stump up thier own money and the rewards are there for all to see. So in answer to your question, "why should they spend ridiculous amounts of thier own money"? Well it's quite simple. They should want to see a return for thier financial input, and the only way they will achieve it is by gaining promotion to the Premiership. It's a bit like like buying a "fixer upper" house in the hope of turning a profit, then spending next **** all on it and hoping to get top doller for it when you sell it on. It doesn't always work out , but generaly you get out what you put in, in anything in life.
