Ben Watson is targeting a return to first team action against his old club Crystal Palace on Tuesday - as well as better luck with referees. The midfielder picked up a second red card in successive matches in last week's 4-1 win against Reading and has mostly been a frustrated bystander in Rangers' recent goal fest. He sits out this week's clash with Leicester City because of a twin-match ban and is desperately hoping to get a run of games under his belt after a stop-start beginning at QPR.
"At the moment, I don't know that I will get back in the team, the way the lads are playing, and I just hope these setbacks won't count against me," said the midfielder, who picked up a second yellow for being too quick with a free-kick. "I thought it was harsh but there's not a lot I could do about it. The ref took his card out and then I think he realised I'd already been booked, but he had to go through with it."
"By the letter of the law, you can get a yellow for taking a free-kick too quickly and I've just had to accept it. But it's disappointing because there's a lack of consistency. Robbie Savage took a quick free-kick on Saturday against us and Derby scored from it." Watson insists he is not a rough player. He said: "I've had two red cards in two games and I've only made two tackles. I'm not a dirty player."
"I had one or two red cards when I was at Palace , but that was over many seasons. I felt unlucky at Swansea too. My first tackle was mistimed but it wasn't malicious. The guy got straight back up and got on with the game. I'm here to play games and I want to play as many as I can, so getting another suspension is frustrating to say the least. We're scoring a lot of goals and winning games and it's hard to watch when you want to be out there. Hopefully I can get back in the team and the run can continue."
The 24 year-old is eager to impress in his loan spell, which ends in January. He would be happy to extend at Loftus Road, but his main aim is to get back to the Premier League as soon as possible. "It's down to Wigan whether they want to call me back. If not, I'll be happy to extend if QPR want to keep me. But let's get to January first. Steve Bruce signed me but then moved on to Sunderland and I wasn't playing under the new gaffer, who couldn't guarantee me football. Instead of me wasting my time and wasting Wigan's time, I thought I might as well get out and play some football somewhere."
"I still hope to put in some performances that will impress back in Wigan. I wasn't there very long, but I want to get back there and be playing in the Premier League."
