  • Points Per Game - Updated

    Updated this since our wins over Reading and Derby:

    Over the past 10 seasons the average points per game needed to finish in the top 6 is 1.608 (which equates to 74 points over a 46 match season) Below are two columns the left being the number of matches times by 1.608 and the left column is the points that Preston had accumulated on a match per match basis last season when they finished 6th.

    13 matches = 21 points ---- Preston 13 matches = 17 points
    14 matches = 23 points ---- Preston 14 matches = 20 points
    15 matches = 24 points ---- Preston 15 matches = 20 points
    16 matches = 26 points ---- Preston 16 matches = 21 points
    17 matches = 27 points ---- Preston 17 matches = 24 points
    18 matches = 29 points ---- Preston 18 matches = 27 points
    19 matches = 31 points ---- Preston 19 matches = 28 points
    20 matches = 32 points ---- Preston 20 matches = 31 points

    After 13 matches last season:
    Preston = 17 points
    Burnley = 20 points
    Sheffield United = 21 points
    Reading = 24 points
    Wolves = 28 points
    Birmingham = 30 points

    As you can see at the same stage we are ahead of where Preston, Burnley and Sheffield United were and only a single point behind Reading. Wolves and Birmingham were way ahead of the pack and stayed there pretty much all season.

    Interesting to note these eventual league winners:
    After 13 matches in 2007/08
    WBA = 23 points
    After 13 matches in 2006/07
    Sunderland = 16 points

    I know some will say that what happened in the past is no reflection to what might happen this season but averages are averages and are a good starting point to see how our season is going. Last season I created a similar type thread on the old proboard and stated that the team in 6th will finish with 74 points (see http://www.wearetherangersboys.com/f...ad.php?t=13885). This wasn't an educated guess but used the stats to prove a point and this season will be no different the top 6 will all average 74 points or more.
