He could have started tinkering as soon as we were mathematically safe.

It'd be counter productive at this point.
At the very least, he has this season got the club moving in one direction and has improved the football, and brought on a couple of youngsters.
It's enough to warrant a pre-season and at least till Christmas next season. We can't keep sacking managers. It seems only Watford can do that and keep moving forward.
One of the principle reasons for not getting rid of Ollie, wether you like him or not, is who else are you gonna get? Exactly.
We can all see why we've taken a sharp nose dive in results, and so can Ollie. He's made a mistake at Bristol, but we played well enough in the 3 games before that, it would seem? To justify what he was up to.
I do hope the wholesale changes to the line up does stop now though. It's not fair to the fringe players, and is becoming unfair to the more senior ones. They aren't good enough or up to speed to accommodate them.
