Younger players are given objectives to match during a game, such as crossing a certain number of times, etc. The result is almost totally irrelevant a lot of the time. unless fans want another thing to complain about.

So that dont apply to the teams who have been smashing our boys ?

Actually agree with Nas on this.

I don't give a monkeys if the youth teams lose 14 nil every week so long as we get a succession of players through the ranks to the first team. That surely has to be our goal in getting players through the system all the way to the top.

Problem is, will we see this progression or are they just a bunch of no-hopers getting slapped every week? Only time will tell but the couple of players coming through to thew first team now give me a bit of hope.

Big problem is that as a London club competition is sky high./ Fulham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs all have VERY good academies (|pains me to say it but right now Fulham are the biggest problem). It will take some time to rebuild our reputation and become somewhere good youngsters want to come.

Of course you beg to differ, any suggestion of positivity makes you beg to differ.

Barcelona's youth team gets relegated and midtable positions on a regular basis in leagues far below those that the first team ends up playing. And yet you're guaranteed to see 5 or 6 of those players either make it for Barca or make it for a top team. Why? Because they stop caring about the result and start caring about teaching, educating players how to play the game the right way. So why should we ask for more from our youth team then barcelona with the best academy in world football ask of their team?

How would you get players through the ranks if they were losing 14-0 every week, out of interest?

Losing heavily would tell me maybe they're not that good, not to mention what it would do for their progression, or lack of, there lack of confidence from getting beaten every week, to name just a couple of things.

Won 6, drawn 1, lost 3 in the Spanish 3rd division. This is the second season in a row they've been in the 3rd division, having been relegated from the second division prior to that. Last season they came perfectly midtable, won 14, drew 9 and lost 15.

That's their reserves team. U19 has won their all and I thought you were talking about academy?

Players in Barcelona go through their B team before going into the first team. It's the equivalent of our under 23's so that is what I was going for. Bartra, Messi, Munir, Busquets, Halilovic, Iniesta, etc, all made their way through the B team, irrespective of it's success and were taught to play a certain way.

Their Juvenil A play in the UEFA Youth League and do quite well but not as dominant as you'd expect the best academy in the world to do. They also play in the Division de Honor Juvenil de Futbol, where they came 4th in their group last season behind Espanol, mallorca and Damm. This season they've been phenomenal, but the players move into the B team against sides who aren't just kids and they don't really do particularly well.

And no player ever makes it from Juvenil A to first team without going through the B side, which is still part of La Masia, the highest level of la masia and the closest to their first team. Read the book about the Barcelona side that tore apart Man Utd in that UCL final. The key thing they tell you is that the most important thing is that a player learns something every game. The result is irrelevant in the long run and isn't indicative of the quality. What matters is learning.

We, as a country, need to get rid of this win/lose mentality when it comes to youth teams.
It's about learning the game and the coaching rather than the results when they are kids coming through.
No-one likes to lose but it should be more about the style and learning, like Barca have been encouraging for years.
