  • My take on the game

So that was easily our best opening game in years. There's so much to talk about but first, here are the Whoscored.com player ratings, which I'll go into a bit more details with.

So they've given top player to Ned and that's primarily down to him getting a goal and an assist which is understandable... the other factors were making 5 interceptions, 2 tackles, 20/23 successful passes and playing 3 of the 7 key passes that led to chances. He's never gonna cross it in particularly well and he really did have to cover for Gladwin's poor positioning but he did so very well, bar one moment where he lost the ball in the Leeds half and had to chase down the guy into our box and make the block with Caulker.

Personally, I would give it to Luongo, we made 16 tackles all game and Luongo made 5 himself, getting a third of all our tackles. He also made 4 blocks, 1 interception, took 56 first touches of the ball and really got involved in that defensive midfield role. For someone of his size to win 3 aerial duels as well is mighty impressive and alongside Henry, he really made it impossible for Leeds to get much of a breakthrough, despite them having more of the ball.

This leads me nicely into my next point which was that only 5 of the 14 players involved today didn't successfully tackle an opposition player and only 2 didn't attempt to tackle an opposition player. If this proves anything, it's that JFH has got the players working his system very nicely. Again, only 2 of our starting 11 didn't intercept an opposition pass, showing how good our closing down was and how intelligent it was. The fact that they had to clear the ball 34 times around their box and we only had to do it 13 speaks volumes about how much pressure we put on them. Smithies didn't even have to make a save today, we were that good at stopping them, bar that one moment where they broke the offside trap (which looks fantastic btw). To only commit 8 fouls in a match when playing such a strong pressing game is great to see as well and 2 of those were from the weak link Gladwin, who looked really off the pace compared to everyone else. Can't wait to get Yeni into this team.

Beyond the numbers, what I saw out there today was a team that was not only hard working, but knew how to work hard, knew when to press, when to put their players under pressure and in what parts of the pitch. I saw a team that, if they play like this all season and end up outside the play off spots, I'd still be proud of because of the commitment to the cause. I saw a team where almost everyone looked like they actually had a job and knew exactly how to counter every attack Leeds had. And what impressed me more than anything else was the fans response to Mide Shodipo. He had a solid debut, especially at his age, but what I loved was that even when he played a mishit cross or a weak delivery, or got tackled and lost out, the fans would still clap for him and cheer him on. I haven't seen that in a long long time at LR. Taking the poison out of the playing staff looks like it will kill the toxicity that has engulfed LR for the last few years. This could be a QPR that we can all be proud of.

Oh he was phenomenal today wasn't he... you can look back at my posts at the back end of last season and in preseason, always said that this kid is going to be up there in terms of the best in this league and this match showed his potential. One point an opposition player looked to outpace him and Luongo just somehow managed to slide himself just enough to get to the ball first and win it clean. It wasn't just his volume of tackles either, the sheer amount of times he came in to tackle from an angle that 90% of the time would lead to a foul and he managed to win the ball clean as a whistle was incredible.

Nice write up bud, would've thought Bidwell and Shod deserved a higher mark, prob Luongo and Henry as well but overall decent review of the game.

Well Naz we both agreed that we'd beat Leeds a couple of weeks ago because fitness and organisation is massive in the first few weeks, and we knew that for once we'd be ready. That is the simple reason for this improved opening game.

Your analysis can not completely ignore how awful Leeds were - much harder to get the stats up when you are under pressure. Having said that, you can only play the opposition who turn up: a very decent start.

Still think we need a workable Plan B. Be interesting to discover what that is.

You seem to be be trying not to consider the fact that they were awful because we were that good. Leeds held the ball and couldn't do anything with it because we closed well. I don't think it's a case of lack of quality because they have quality players, it's a case of us being so aggressive that they couldn't play their game.

Some were tipping leeds for playoffs. We made them look poor. Great team performance and impressed with the teams composure in seeing the game out, something we have lacked in the past

Was Beradi just taken off for being really poor? ANd I get why Shodipo and Bidwell didnt get higher ratings. The way we play can really stop other teams which is great. And didnt we win 4-0 th year we got promoted. I know we won 5-0 against Blackpool one year. Also the 75/76 we beat Liverpool 2-0 in ppener, great grandad tolkd that to me a few times.

Such a good result, and we hit the post twice and Ned got pulled down in the area attacling a corner which was another certain penalty but the ref didnt see it. Could of been even better with a bit more luck.

                      Good write up Nas.

It was interesting to note in The Loftcast JFH saying it was Steve McClaren who first encouraged him to get into coaching and gave him his first opportunity. Up until that point he'd never even considered it as a career.

Injured according to Monk. The dissent he showed was just frustration over that.

Good old Shteve was great at everything in backroom football except management itself...

Shodipo scoring lower than Gladwin? Hmmmm.

Makes me not take it as serious as I'd like Nas.

The main reason was that shodipo took double the touches Gladwin did but was dispossessed twice, hence losing score. You get rated on your success here and because Gladwin did literally nothing, his score was very constant. Shodipo's use of the ball and losing it twice in his 34 touches of it is what ultimately cost him the score. Their actual score is Shodipo 6.43 and Gladwin 6.49 so it is barely different. Shodipo took 1 shot, gladwin took two technically, with the first one being for the first goal and his second one being off target. Shodipo's only shot was blocked and because shodipo had 6 crosses and Gladwin only had 3, shodipo had greater cross error and hence was marked down.

At the same time I agree that the scores are off but I don't put too much on the score as opposed to the stats themselves. Luongo got a 7.3 only despite making a third of our tackles and winning a fifth of our aerial duels.
