First game of the season, hope always soars high, despite any previous concerns - it's still summer and blue sky thinking takes over.
I have to say, I've really enjoyed watching the squad come together and the earnest labours of JFH, Les and Lee Hoos, as we enter a new era of sensible spending. It's just as exciting as seeing an expensive squad assembled IMO, perhaps more so, because this time, maybe for the first time, we can see, read and understand exactly what is being done and why. Of course we always feel involved - albeit vicariously - in our team - but somehow it feels closer this time - maybe because it is no longer about ridiculous fees and Premiership bullsh1t, but more about honest endeavour, seeking out the gems and the bargains in football's lower leagues.
When I watched the game v Watford, I could see what Jimmy's trying to achieve come together on the pitch. I saw a tightly knit team, not a collection of individuals, and that is exciting too. Personally it doesn't bother me at all that we haven't made a marquee signing. It's the process that I'm enjoying.
We've all been on the Rangers rollercoaster for some time now, some of us for decades, some for the last few years - either way, you can't deny it's deeply interesting as a process, or even as a story - a drama that unfolds with more twists and turns than a soap opera. At times, it's been like a soap opera. But one thing I want to acknowledge here is that we all have a choice. We have a choice to support Rangers, a choice to feel either angry or happy or excited or underwhelmed by what is happening. And because we have a choice, it always surprises me how deeply miserable some people seem about the ongoing process. Since we're only doing this out of choice, why choose to get so upset? Some posts that are full of bile and rage amuse or amaze me. But then of course I get it - we all love drama - we're addicted to the drama - drama is what makes the world go by. We love a good flounce, to vent our spleen, to shout, because then when the high moments happen, and of course they do happen, we feel so much better. Moments like Zamora's Wembley goal or learning 'no points reduction' an hour before kick-off on the last game of the season make it all worth while.
So here we are again. I've got my ticket in R block, looking forward to seeing old mates and the start of the latest chapter in the QPR drama. I think we've got a fine young manager in JFH and I'm excited to see how things evolve. Come on you Rs.
