I'd like to see us retaining possession FAR better.
I've always strongly believed in the adage if the opposition don't have the ball then they can't hurt you. IMO this has been one of our main weaknesses over the last few years, mainly because we've lacked the quality in midfield to be able to keep the ball under pressure. As Bill Shankly so wisely used to say "Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple." That 'pass and move' philosophy is just as true today as it's ever been.
It's all very well JFH wanting to play a high-tempo game but he needs to get the basics right first. Playing high-tempo is completely useless if you can't control and keep the football in the first place. We need a midfield who are adept enough at this that it's second nature to them. We don't presently have that, and haven't for a long time now.
Not to mention needing a new RB, CB and CF.

Anywhere between 1st and 8th, really... I think the board and Manager would be frustrated if it was less, if they was being brutally honest.
Good core at the club now, rid of 3 Perm players (Fer, Sandro and Caulker if possible) bring in 5 decent new players and we have a chance.

What they don't get is that the less possession you have, the better you have to be on the ball.
Leicester may not have dominated possession, but they used it properly.Last edited by hal9thou; 16-05-2016, 02:50 PM.
