Ok so then let me ask you, how many goals and assists would you have wanted from 795 minutes of football? What is an amount that for you, would be considered good enough. Just give me the number."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. The idea that I trust my eyes more than the stats, I just don't buy that because I've seen magicians pull rabbits out of hats and I know I just know that rabbit's not in there." - Billy Beane

Also, I'd like to apologise to the Mods and other users for clogging up your thread, you're more than welcome to move this to the slug it out section if you feel its necessary. This and the other thread are legitimately a pair of the most ludicrous arguments I've had on here with someone and I've dealt with Bill ffs."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. It is despite his lack of effort that he has scored and assisted as much as he has. The mark of a talented player. In spite of his lack of effort, he has accomplished plenty. That should say enough.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostI go back to my point of stats do not tell the true story of players. Phillips has scored a few this season but has he covered himself in glory this whole season?"What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. Alright mate, someone who disagrees with you has no clue about football. How can you even say he isn't talented? He was nominated for London player of the year 2015 for very good reason and I'll give you a hint, it's not because he's a sh it e footballer.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostYou really have no clue about football mate as if you believe the last part then you really are blinkered by your stats and in his case they have dressed him up tobe something he is not."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. How do you influence games? You can break it down to plenty of things, but one breakdown is goals and assists and he's got a few, certainly could have gotten more but that's a testament to his talent that we expect more from him. Do I think he's had a good season? Relative to what he can do? It's been average. Relative to other wingers we could have had from this league? He's had a great season.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostJust for the record are you saying that in your mind Phillips has had a good season? And by that I mean influenced games not just the goals he has scored!
You're really looking for ways to disprove my points, saying sh it like "I mean influenced games not just the goals he has scored", he's assisted, got plenty of crosses in, plenty of shots, plenty of runs, you act like he ought to be a defensive player, running and chasing like there's no tomorrow. He's just not that sort of player in general and while this season he's not done all that heavy closing etc, he's done a decent amount and he's influenced games by doing what he does best, shooting, scoring, crossing, assisting."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. He absolutely has, 19 games since January that he's played, 7 goals or assists in those times. As I said, could be doing more, but he's been by no means bad or not good. We just expect more from him, but again, he's better than the other options and has an end product.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostI read your last post and ask this. Has he done any of what you have listed consistently since say January?"What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. I probably would be and I would stand by it. It's my opinion. There's nothing deluded by the fact that he's got final product, no matter what he does in between. You have 3 different types of player in my opinion. You have the players that are all application but no output and you need those players in your squad to graft when necessary. You have the players who offer a solid amount of application and final product and you definitely need them to be the majority of the squad. Finally you have the players with final product but little application, a la Phillips. You definitely need those players as well. They get the job done, they do what's necessary and nothing more. You'll get frustrated by them, but ultimately, they get you results. Phillips has won or drawn us 7 matches by scoring or assisting at the right time. 10 points have been won off of the Phillips final product. Say what you want about a lack of application or passion, or how he could be doing more for us, but those points are big points at the end of the day. They're what matters. You need all those players, a balance of them to win.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostNass mate you are seriously deluded and mis lead by your stats. He has been a disgrace with his attitude and lack of application and them numbers pull up.do no tell the reality. Put a poll on here and I guarantee you would be in a tiny minority with that opinion."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. Well then you're absolutely off the ball, I've literally just factually proven it. I've actually just shown you that he's won us 10 more points this season than we would likely have had without his direct input in the form of a goal or assist. What more do you want from him to prove that he's changed the game? I'll agree to a degree with the criticism that he hasn't worked hard. I'll agree with the criticism that he hasn't done as much as he could. But to say that he hasn't changed games? There's your proof right there on the league table, 10 points and 8 positions on the league table.Originally posted by 1973 ranger View PostAs I said before you are so wrapped up in stats that you have no idea of reality. Phillips is no game changer or someone who influences games on a consistent basis. Having watched him for 3 seasons I can say that with a very straight face."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value.
