How does the saying go? There is only 1 stat that matters and that's the scoreline. Kind of how I feel about it to be honest.
All this Opta stuff is interesting but in reality, stats on their own are pretty pointless. I bet Tom Carroll stats for us were pretty impressive but when you watched him play you realised that he spent half the game passing the ball sideways or backwards and rarely ventured much further forward than the D of the half way line. Much like Joe Allen at Liverpool, great stats for passing but the stats don't tell you that only 1 pass out of 10 has gone forwards.
For someone to take the stats thing to the level that Nasser does is just plain daft in my opinion. Trust what you see with your eyes not what you read on a spreadsheet after the game!Last edited by Tarbie; 29-01-2016, 08:47 PM.

Alongside that, I've also said a million times that I'm a season ticket holder (And I'm as glad to have a season ticket as Steve is to not have one) and I go and watch every game live in the stadium, check the stats when I get back and then watch the game the next day on player. I check everything, every little detail about the games we play (and many other games around europe), I'm on it. I have a very very close knit group of friends who watch everything we can around Europe and the world as we love the sport in general and see a lot of potential in the combinations used at many clubs of Stats and Scouts.
I've been on this forum for a few years and been posting stats here for just over a year, initially to a positive response, before people started finding that the stats held an opinion different to their own and stated that they were wrong, or incomplete or just ignoring them in general. But I've persevered because I believe in the combinations of my numbers and my eyes. Just as other people will persevere with their eyes alone because they believe that they can't miss anything. I can't attack them for that, its what they want to do. I appreciate people who look at the stats and while not taking them at face value, actually combine them with what they saw and use that to make an informed statement (as you have said should be done), as opposed to people who just ignore them because I posted them, or because they go against what they think they saw.
I take the stats thing to a very high level because that's the level of detail I like to know. Its important to me to have the full picture. However, being subjected to stereotypically sit there and not care what's in front of me at the stadium just looking at the numbers alone is something I very much am against and don't do.
As for the Tom Carroll thing, while I understand your position on him (similar to many on here), he is a very different player to what most want him to be, which is an attacking playmaker. What he is, is a ball recycler and when a team plays a very high tempo of football, he is key to the success, just as Allen has been developing at a higher level now for Liverpool under Klopp's high pressing game. Carroll will literally move the ball around, make the move continue as fast as possible and that's it. That's all he needed to do and a lot of the time, doing that could win you a match because he had such a high pass accuracy that the opposition had much much less time on the ball. How are they going to threaten our goal if they can't get the ball."What stats allow you to do is not take things at face value. The idea that I trust my eyes more than the stats, I just don't buy that because I've seen magicians pull rabbits out of hats and I know I just know that rabbit's not in there." - Billy Beane
