I'm really really struggling to see how this signing is a bad one? Young, promising keeper, who can push Smithies all the way and bring out the best in him...What's not to like?

      Bravo Matty, Bravo.

      Scouting Report:

Please find a keeper who is not better than our current one and doesnt mind sitting on the bench.
      Personal? Nope.

You banged on about Palace. The same Palace who have a 36 year old who's settled and in no rush to move? The same club where McCarthy wants out?

Speroni is actually the type we need. A lad who will help Smithies improve, not kick up a fuss when not playing and more than able to come in when needed. A far more sensible option all round. But hey, the goalkeeper position is like a striker one isn't it?

Just like you have 4 decent strikers..
Stop comparing strikers to keepers, jesus. Chalk and cheese.

End of the day, the club needs 2 decent keepers. In the grand scheme of things, being number 2 at QPR for a year and earning half decent dough for playing 5-10 games ain't gonna hurt Ingram massively, he's young enough. If he turns out to be a real find and dislodges Smithies from the first team then it's been a great move for him and Smithies moves to another Championship club in the summer or at some point next season!
I just think we should be giving Smithies a chance, just like we should have given McCarthy.

Bring in an experienced keeper towards the end of his career like Speroni, Given etc. Someone who will bring Smithies and Lumley on leaps and bounds yet be happy to be back up and good enough when/if needed.

I would prefer to bring in young, hungry players with potential and re-sale value, rather than one-last-paycheck players, even if they bring experience. That goes for pretty much all positions on the pitch.

And why does bringing this guy in equal "not giving Smithies a chance"?
              QPR since 1993
              WATRB since 2015
First QPR game hopefully in 2017

                - Why? I'll compare right wingers, or right backs, any fooooking position mate. You have depth in your squad to provide assurance of having a good eleven and backup for injuries.

                - You said about clubs having too many good keepers, but all clubs do. Speroni is still good enough to play first team at Champ level though, just like Green is right now but will be a back up at Prem level.

Sorry Matty - IMO I dont see the logic of having a bang average second keeper.

I agree but not in this position.

Do you think we'll get £2m for Smithies if he's the one who wants out? Not for me.

To be fair, this is Jimmy's team now and he might not like Smithies and see's Ingram as his number one, which is fair enough.

Time will tell but one things for sure, we'll be looking for another keeper in 6-12 months.

I'll tell you why a keeper is different. The number one plays 95% of the time.

You can easily have all 4 strikers at the club on the pitch in a match when you're chasing a goal. An outfield player knows there is a good chance they'll play even if they're on the bench. A sub keeper doesn't get used unless an injury.

Unfortunately you can't bring on an extra keeper when you're under the cosh, that's the difference between having numerous options outfield and very little in the keeper position.

Im sorry, but that stat is not confirmed anywhere???? First game of the season your keeper could have nightmare so you drop him or first game of the season he might break his leg.

Either way, if that happened then you want a back-up keeper who is decent. All clubs have them for fook sake lad.

I've seen Ingram play a few times this season down at Wycombe. He's a big lad for 22 and one of the most talented players in League 2...

Hopefully he develops further with us over the next couple of years and is given a good shot.

                          Good signing.

Whoever is sub will be unhappy and want out. My only thoughts are is 6 months after signing him for £2m, we don't rate Smithies.

Smithies and Lumley are a perfect combination. We just keep taking one step forward and two back with goalkeepers.

This Wycombe kid might be brilliant but come the summer we'll be looking for another keeper because either him or Smithies will want out.
                            You have it spot on.

Where have I said we shouldn't have an able second choice? Nowhere.

I've said it's silly to have two goalkeepers of the same ability who both want to play at the top. Why? Because only one will play 95% of the games unless an injury occurs. Therefore, the one who's not playing will want to move on sharpish. You don't swap keepers like strikers as you seem to think! Go through the squads of football league clubs and look at the goalkeeper position. You might be surprised to see one and only one playing every week.

                                I'll say this.

McCarthy was here a year and played 3 games. One of Smithies or Ingram will be gone in 12 months in my opinion.

3 good young keepers and we'd have got rid of two with them hardly having a kick.
