I love Stan and had a season ticket throughout his time at the R's, he was a true rangers GREAT, trust me. But he was nowhere near as good as Messi is, that is a whole other level.

Personal opinion, I rate the original Ronaldo, Maradona, and Ronaldinho ahead of messi even though they didn't score 40 goals a season like Messi and the current Ronaldo which I know sounds strange to say.@chrisrobson9

Don't think we can compare Messi & Stan directly.
2 completely different eras.
Messi has had all the advantages that modern players have, Diets, boots, pitches
Stan played on swamps (home games) had defenders that were allowed to take him out and not even get a foul for it.
Boots were standard leather, the diets were steaks before a game, although Stan's were stakes down at Corals!!
Now obviously Messi would be better today but the standard has got higher
In the 70s it was more bog standard football, well in England, apart from Sexton's boys who played a continental
style flowing football instead. There were other mavericks but Stan was the best imo

I think some of us are missing the point here. Whether Stan was as good as Messi is impossible to prove and irrelevant today. He was simply the best we ever had. End of. A QPR legend and our greatest ever player. No doubt.
Tomorrow we need to join and celebrate the great man.
Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley. Bowles is the king of Loftus Road!

Get what your saying about international level but he can't help the fact that Argentina arnt all that . It's a team game after all , if he'd been born in Brazil instead it wouldn't be in question . The thing I really admire about him is you barely see him in the papers being a flash #### or being a nob head like the modern day players . He just adores playing football and for me will go down in history as one of if not the best to ever play the beautiful game . He just wants to play and to win . The original Ronaldo was also an unreal player (that goal he scored for barca which had bobby robson bemused is one of the best I've ever seen ) but he's had his off field issues . As has Ronaldinho and obviously maradona. Not saying they arnt amazing players because they are but for the overall package messi wins it for me . All about opinions though mate and all players mentioned are or were totally world classLast edited by Greg1882; 22-08-2015, 05:29 AM.

I saw him make his debut against Nottingham Forest at Loftus Rd, then spent the next few years watching him destroy teams, and was so proud that we, little old QPR had the best player in England.
So many memories, will we ever see his like again?I have supported Rangers for 55 seasons, since March 1969.

I attended every home game of the 75/76 season, and think I'd have to agree. Looking back now it's incredible to think we had such a world-class talent grace our club for all those years.

European Cup before it was called the Champions League? No disrespect to him as I never saw him and I trust my old man, and your guys judgement on him, but Messi is regarded the best to ever play the game (not my opinion by the way as I think 2 or 3 were better than Messi).

The only reason he never get more England caps was because of Don Revie's over-disciplinarian management, which ultimately led to failure for him despite the wealth of great talent he had at his disposal, with Stan leading the pack. More unfortunate was that Gerry was England captain at the time whom he had a telepathic relationship with.
