No i really, REALLY dont want to rip into the bloke and know it is hard to come off the bench for a keeper, but thought his all round performance was terrible. Such a poor goal to concede, looked like a fish out of water when he hesitated to come out and only didn't concede by someone saving it on the line, threw the ball straight out of play and kicking wasnt great

Happy to give him another chance, but needs to massively improve.

Yes Green farked up, but not sure SMithies is going to be the savior some think he will be.

I must admit I thought he should have done better for the goal and there was another dodgy moment just before then. But I'm certainly not writing him off as it's his first game for a while (second I suppose after cup) and I don't like players being written off after next no games. Case in point is De Gea was written off by many after mistakes in his first year now he is probably in top 3 keepers in the world. Obviously I don't think Smithies will be that good but players need time and shouldn't always be questioned after every mistake.

Done the same against Carlisle. Failed to race out and smother the ball, leading to a goal.

Same, don't want to get on his back early, but these are basics in the goalkeeping world. From what I've seen so far, he looks very poor I'll be honest.

Just said similar on another thread, agree with all of the above. Hope he picks up now the nerves are out of his sytem and proves us wrong.

Can't help but think we missed a trick not going more seriously for that Bentley at Southend.

goalies don't seem to use their feet to save these days, Pat Jennings was a master at it. What I find unforgivable, are goalies who can't even do the basics of controlling and kicking a ball. Are you listening Greeno?

Funny as I was never that happy with McCarthy but he has moved on and playing well for Palace. Smithies again seems lack of confidence that must surely be nerves and the winner on saturday was very poor keeping almost stumbled down for it. Hopefully though he will settle down and push Green for a starting place. Wont write him off yet, remember Stejkal really struggled at first but became a very good keeper for us.

Looks like the rangers curse has got to him quicker than I thought. Seen how he good he was at Huddersfield and watching him Saturday was like watching a different keeper.

I watched the highlights over the weekend and to be fair to Smithies, there was a slight touch on the ball from one of our defenders just after the striker got the shot off so it did change the flight of the ball a little. Not sure if he shouldn't have got more on it but the deflection didn't help matters..

I was livid when he let that goal in, a good should never get best at his near post eer!

Wish him all the best against Blackburn, I always like to give players a fresh slate if it's an odd mistake or two

Say he were to play really well mid week and keep a good clean sheet would Rob be an automatic shoe in for the weekend or could Smithies keep his place?

Fact is our defence doesn't protect the goalkeeper enough. Sort the defence out and maybe our keepers will be more confident.

Guess we are just depending on the return of injured players to do that without the transfer window being open and all and personally i'm not a fan of loans. Yun, Sandro and Fer would surely help hold up our defence and make it ever so slightly better
