The only thing that would make sense is a two year extension with a £10m release clause in it from next summer.

However, this is just posturing from the club to get those bids on the table. He'll be gone inside the month and we all have to live with it I'm afraid...

So instead of wanting £15m with 1 year left this Summer, you'd advocate us wanting only £10m next summer albeit with 2 years left on his contract (with your extension) ?

Other than that, I agree with your sentiments.

I think that might be the only way Charlie would sign it to be fair to davman

What happened to the Newcastle thing? He's gone imo.

That's my point. It's only fair to say to Charlie: "Stay with us this season; if we go up, you're back in teh Prem; if we don't you will be more affordable to other Prem clubs"...

Why is it just posturing? Surely it would be good for us if Charlie signed a new contract! We would of course be paying him more but obviously it would be a multi-year contract so that if he goes, his PRICE in the transfer market will be the same as his VALUE - again good for us.

Obviously the contract would need to be good for Charlie too. If we offer him £60k per week (just my guess on what others are likely to offer) that is £32k per week more than the reported £28k he is getting now - so right off the bat he'd be £1.66m further ahead over the next year. And since the multi-year contract would eliminate the PRICE reduction that comes with having only one year left on your contract, it would be more likely that somebody will meet our valuation and he will get the move to the Premier League that he wants and deserves.

Yes, we would likely need to include a release clause but I'd say £15m for this summer and £20m for next summer. I'd also place a limit on when that release clause is active so that if he goes we still have time to get in a replacement.

If Charlie's agent doesn't like it then Charlie can carry on and play the next year in the Championship for £28k per week and hope he doesn't have a drop in form or get a serious injury while he doesn't have the security of a multi-year contract (although I'm positive we will get our £15m this summer anyway). There are lots of good reasons for Charlie to sign a new multi-year deal with us - and far fewer for his agent to recommend it to him, since his agent will be alright Jack if Charlie gets a long term injury while not having the security of a multi-year deal - but Charlie will be screwed.

I think if Austin was gonna sign a new contract to include release clauses etc, he would have signed it in Jan.

Could be, but if he starts getting nervous about not getting a move he may have a re-think. Ironically, signing a new contract with us will increase the chances he will be playing in the Premier League this season (as it will increase his PRICE and make it more likely somebody will meet our valuation).

As I said above, Charlie signing a new contract with us makes a lot more sense for CHARLIE than it does for his AGENT. I have a strong suspicion that Charlie is getting bad advice and perhaps at some point he will start thinking about what is best for HIMSELF, not his effing AGENT. Playing out the last year of your deal is risky, particularly when much bigger money and a multi-year deal is on offer.
