I'm not gonna mention stats just yet but today in particular, I thought he was excellent defensively, made countless good challenges when double teaming on dyer and then routledge with hill.

Barton has this weird thing of being really really really good at defending. He then loses composure when passing and tries something wasteful and unnecessary. I just wish he would try to play basic stuff and let the wingers do the leg work. The thing I really noticed being a big issue today was his positioning. Far too often he was caught up at the top of the pitch playing near the strikers and trying to hustle up there, leaving henry alone deeper in defence. Combine this with Caulker going walkabout on a regular basic and you tend to be left exposed in the middle. If he just learnt to play deeper, he would be a solid midfielder till the end of the season.

                    !
Spot on Cally ! I'd be tempted to hang on to Barton a while tho if we could stop him from being head cook and bottle washer and let somebody else take a free kick or corner now and a again , mind a bit of dosh or a swap deal for him would be tempting , the others you mention I dont think we should kid our selves waisting time looking for a fee just get off the wage bill to make room

to the OP i think the headline "major surgery needed" is a touch overboard. no one expects Vargas to miss a clear 1 on 1 with the keeper like that (nor a shte keeper like Flappy HandsKeep to save it), nor for us to not score on any of those 3 attempts in the dying seconds of the game. I thought for sure Charlie would've been credited once again for a "poachers goal".

in the end, a healthy sandro and yun wouldve also helped, but 'major surgery'?? ... nah come off it mate.

i will give u 2 points: i wish harry wouldve brought on some more subs and much earlier. Bobby was clearly out of gas 5-10 mins before he was taken off. And I dont know why Niko wasnt on the bench.
other point = with the Rob Green error, perhaps he'll be given some rest and McCarthy will be given another go at it for a game

What error did he make mate thought he was solid enough yesterday barring odd dodgy kick

I think he is referencing the lucky red card escape. I agree with resting him this weekend just because of the opposition but not if it were a prem match. Won't do his confidence any good. One major issue I have with Green is that he does not communicate with his defence at all. There are times when Caulker wants him to collect the ball and he doesn't respond. Sometimes Caulker is calling for a short pass and green clears to no one. If he works on that he will really be a top prem goalie

Tbh, I am likely in the minority, I don't think we need to make too many changes. tad knee jerk after a disappointing game I think.

Personally think we are lacking a dynamic & creative midfielder, we are playing Henry & Barton in CM, both of whom need to be the "enforcer" type player alongside a creative player. However as we have them together, Barotn is having to try & do the creative side of things & he just aint good enough for that.

IMO we need a creative CM, a decent striker (ideally a "big man" to do the Zamora role) and possibly a left back. If (huge if of course) we can address these, I would be more than happy going into the business end of the season.
