Like it... 'Savior' by the The Chlie Peppers could be Vargas's song.... we could sing it when he's having a good game.... though I'm not sure its the type of song you sing at a football match

            We can't do both:

            a) play Vargas in his preferred/natural position
            b) play him as part of a front two

This idea that "sticking the striker out on the wing" is somehow a waste of their talents is an outdated English idea. 442 isn't very common in most countries. Vargas will have spent approximately 0% of his career as part of a big man/little man 'two up top' combo chasing after flickons from the big man and hoping for crosses into the box. Using him like that really would be a waste.

I wouldn't mind seeing him up front, but in a 433/4231 type formation with Adel behind him delivering through balls.

Vargas has spent most of his career as a wide forward though.

Here he is at Uni de Chile in 2011 as right-forward:

The wide players were excellent. Eduardo Vargas has been linked with a move to various European clubs and is clearly the star man. According to Jonathan Wilson, he is “a less technical, more direct version of Alexis Sanchez”, which can be attributed, at least in part, to the aforementioned differences in the duties of the wide players under Bielsa and Sampaoli.

And in Chile's standard formation in the run-up to the WC:

The area which shouldn’t be affected is the front two. Sampaoli deploys two highly mobile, pacey and energetic wide forwards drifting inside into goalscoring positions, and it’s difficult to tell whether Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas are truly strikers or wingers.

They’re somewhere in between, and opponents will find it difficult to work out whether the full-backs or the centre-backs should be marking them. This can be highly effective, as it means Chile can pin back a four-man defence with just two players, and therefore have an extra man in midfield (as well as the usual spare man at the back).

Subs: Hoilett Phillips McCarthy Zamora Mutch Fer Ferdinand

Thanks. Excellent movement for that first goal. From 1:32 onwards you can tell Alexis Sanchez (passer), Vidal (decoy run across goal to make space) and Vargas (runs into space and scores) all know exactly what they're doing. That's what a well-coached side with intelligent players looks like. It would be criminal to write off Vargas at this point.

Second goal excellent too. It's ridiculous that we have the World Cup's second best right flank* and we've stuck them on our bench.

                *Lahm and Muller, obvs.

Who is going to break in behind or show any inclination to make forward runs in attacking positions though? Only really Vargas. That's not Austin's game and both Adel and Niko prefer to sit behind the ball and watch the game ahead of them. Can't let Barton or Sandro make many forward runs if they're part of a two and they don't have the engine to be box to box anyway.

Was listening to Tim Vickery talking about the Chilean players in the early hours this morning. He was saying the exact same thing about Vargas in terms of playing to his strengths. He said we could have an amazing player on our hands, with fantastic technical ability and that he's a real rough diamond.

Also referred to Isla as a "Rampaging wing back", so not too sure sticking him in as a right back in a flat back four was ever the most intelligent of moves. All this nonsense about players not liking 3-5-2 makes you wonder if Harry does anything other than pick a team. We have the players for it, just need them to work bloody hard at getting it right.

I personally think that we have enough options within the squad to play or switch between whatever formations we want, providing the right players are on the pitch and they have a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

                      Cheers for that.

Problem is that Chile are not static, they move around get into space.

He has to start with Adel behind him.

Been great for me on fifa. Two footed and brilliant weavery dribbling skills for getting through defences better than the brute strength merchants.

I'd like to see Isla in the rm role, if we have a flat back 4. But tbh as Brighton has posted with the Chile boys in the team maybe 352 should be revisited. We can't just
dump Isla, and Vargas should play a run of games
