Ady Williams, BBC Berkshire Sports Presenter, gives his view on Alex McCarthy following his move to QPR from Reading ...
How good a goalkeeper have QPR signed in Alex McCarthy?
A really great young keeper. I've been a big fan of his from day one. He broke into the England squad last year and that's how good he is. He was outstanding in the Premier League for Reading a couple of years ago. He's a young Englishman, a big presence, a strapping lad at 6ft'4 and I think he can go right to the very top. He's a very level-headed young man and I think Queens Park Rangers have signed a top class young goalkeeper. Playing in the Premier League won't faze him one bit.

What are his strengths and weaknesses as a keeper?
Strengths wise - he's a top shot-stopper and he's very commanding when it comes to crosses being launched into the box. He's very dominant. When he comes for a cross, nine times out of ten he will catch it; if he doesn't, he'll get enough on a big punch. I don't see too many weaknesses in his game and hopefully QPR fans won't either. He's a young man and isn't the loudest, so maybe he needs to communicate a bit better, but that's just me trying to find a negative that I don't think he has.

At 24, he's still relatively young for a top-flight goalkeeper - do you feel he is ready to compete with Rob Green for the number one spot?
Without doubt, 100 per-cent. I've been saying for a while now that he's ready to be a Premier League number one and for that reason I'm surprised no-one has come in for him earlier. I'm also surprised none of the so-called bigger clubs have shown an interest. I think Harry has signed a top young goalkeeper and I expect him to push Rob for the shirt from the moment he arrives. I've seen him for a while now and I really do think Alex has everything in his game to play at the top level. I think it's a great move for him.

He was called up to the senior England squad last year - do you see him earning full international honours in the future?
Yes, very much so. I'm not getting carried away when I say this, but I believe he's the best young keeper we've got. I spoke to Roy Hodgson a little while ago at a charity match at the Madejski Stadium and asked him about Alex. He said that he really likes him and that he's definitely in the shop window for the England squad. I just think it's a really good move for QPR, Alex and probably Reading as well with his contract due to expire next summer.

      Alex heads to Loftus Road

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has this afternoon completed a transfer to Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old leaves with our very best wishes after progressing through the Academy all the way to the full England squad. He will always be fondly remembered at Madejski Stadium.

With Alex having entered the final year of his contract here in Berkshire, the initial deal is a good one for Reading Football Club and we also have significant financial protection moving forward.

Alex now gets the chance to ply his trade back in the Barclays Premier League and hopefully push for England honours once again. He has signed a four-year deal at Loftus Road, though will not be available for their clash with Sunderland this weekend.

And importantly, with Adam Federici, Mikkel Andersen et al, the Royals remain in a very good position with regards to goalkeepers for the present and future.

Director of Football Nick Hammond said, “We brought Alex here as a young player and he has developed into a fine goalkeeper who has been part of the senior England setup.

“His aspiration was to go to the Premier League and we fully understand that, this is a really good opportunity for him. He’s another of our Academy players who have gone on to the Premier League, and everybody at the club wishes him well.

“Last but not least, I’d like to thank Queens Park Rangers for the professional manner in which they’ve handled all of our negotiations.”

Manager Nigel Adkins said, “We've got high aspirations for Alex, he's going to be a top Premier League goalkeeper, and we want him to be in the England setup. For him to do that, being in the Premier League is obviously more advantageous, a deal's been acceptable for the football club and we wish him well as he moves on.

“The good thing for us is that in Adam Federici and Mikkel Andersen we've got excellent goalkeepers, then Jon Henly, Dan Lincoln, Stuart Moore, Lewis Ward from the 18s, lots of good young goalkeepers. Feds will be number one and everyone is there to support him.”

Since making his Royals debut in February 2011, McCarthy made a total of 74(+1) appearances in a Reading shirt, and won caps for England under 21s before being part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for senior games against Ireland and Brazil.

that bit in bold spells out to me that reading are greatful for us to agree undisclosed clause. maybe because they dont want to admit they only got 2mil for him and upset the reading fans lol.
      nice touch all the same.

This really is some signing. Well done Queens Park Rangers !!
        Under Les Ferdinand:
Luke Freeman, top assists in the league: 4million
Alex Smithies, great goalie for this club: 3,5million
Charlie Austin, 19 Premier League goals: 4million
Jack Robinson: Contract ran out, left for free
        And many more mistakes

LES FERDINAND, IT'S TIME TO GO

Having listened to that interview it very much sounds like he has come I as the number one and not to warm the bench. Will be interesting to see this one progress between him and Green for no other reason that there were so many saying that Green was the best thing since sliced bread when the thought of Cesar coming back was suggested

I don't know enough about McCarthy to say if he is a good signing but I do know like others Green although decent does have clangers in him
