  • Harry's ideas are worrying

I'm not posting this message to sulk, certainly not after 2 games.

But even before watching the Tottenham and Hull games it was obvious that we don't have the right players to play a 3-5-2 formation. When you play 3 at the back, all three defenders have to have pace because you can sometimes find yourselves exposed on the counter-attack, which happened countless times against Tottenham. It puzzels me as to why Harry thinks Dunne can play alongisde two other slow defenders in Caulker and Rio. It also worries me that he rates Dunne over Nedum, who was by far our best defender last year and he can actually use his feet and has a bit of pace - unlike Dunne.
It seems to me that all Harry's plans have gone straight down the drain after just one-and-a-half games. Even though we've signed 2 defenders, Harry is going to have to get another one in and one who can actually run and use the ball with his feet. He has to scrap his 3-5-2 plans and play either 4-3-3, 4-3-2-1 or 4-5-1 because 3-5-2 is never going to work with the players we've got. We'll also need to find a replacement for Traore because he's not Premier League standard. He's far too casual on the ball and simply not good enough.
The most worrying thing for me is why Harry believed or still believes that we have the players to play 3-5-2. It's so obvious that we don't yet he's getting paid thousands to manage our team. I remember he told the press last season that no one plays 4-4-2 anymore but after a string of bad results and a lack of goals he decided to change from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2. All this says to me that he doesn't really have a clue. He's a great motivater but a very poor tactician.
And just to add, we MUST keep Remy. We cannot afford to rely on strikers who haven't proved themselves in the Premier League.

Good post but the 'have to keep remy' bit im not so sure about, hes done nothing in two games so far. Obviously down to service, but how come he didnt get on the end of a a chance like phillips, caulker or Zamora did today?
I dont think hes quite the world beater a lot on here think he is.

Traore is probably the fastest player in the team...

I think you might be forgetting the fact that he's had no pre-season and he's about the only player we have who is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and he actually has pace, which is something we are lacking big time

Mainly because they have so few options ahead of them.

We play so slowly that we rarely get decent overlaps going, to offer options and drag defenders around to make space, so there's no option but to turn and try and lay the ball back. Was the same all last season, but it was all Carroll's fault for being rubbish.

Was matty phillips fit enough and has he had enough match time to start upfront against a really good spurs team away from home?
Harry played so defensively last season against proper poor teams, but in the prem he plays an all out attack formation.
Tarbie i take it all back, hes deffo losing it. :

Excellent post by sirles9. We need to get more speed on the back line before employing three central backs; that's just common sense. We have to be counter-attackers this season -- don't have enough skilled players to play all-out and lost full-out to better teams. Find the fastest players on the team with some measure of skill and start them. Keep Remy -- a must -- with a savvy playmaker by his side he's fast and dangerous. Harry should publicly hand the game management of the team over to Hoddle. Missing a Vargas-type player up front, and we need midfielders with pace and touch.
