Why not look at Welbeck's goals per minute?
9 goals in 15 starts and 10 sub appearances isn't too shabby. 1462 minutes in total, so a goal every 162 minutes - or one every 1.8 matches.
That'd work out to 21 across a full season.
Of course, the season before that he hardly scored at all so maybe the above is an exaggeration. Or maybe he's improving? Either way, its a fairer representation than just looking at the raw numbers of a guy who can't get in to an excellent forward line.

Wellbeck is a striker that is not playing in his best position most of the time, if Hull get him he will score 15 goals easily. When I've seen him play centre forward for United, he has done well against your average PL team. I like the lad, always puts in a shift for England too, not many get that accolade!

Couldn't he work as a wing back? Everyone is talking about his goals ratio but I don't really see him as a striker. I would put him down as an attacking midfielder. His pace and energy, I think he will be huge for us. I agree if we had him as a striker then the stats don't look good. But as a midfielder, him chipping in 9 goals a season will be worth it. Plus he will set Remy and Austin up with goals. Also he will be ideal when Harry wants to play 1 up from away from home against the big teams. He will play behind the lone striker'The problem with quotes on the internet is you don't know if they are authentic' - Abraham Lincoln

Nah he is a striker who can play anywhere across the front. He'd be wasted as a wing back.
Out of interest how many goals do people reckon Remy would have got playing on the wing for Utd last season? Cos it wouldn't be many. Only very special players in good teams can hit high numbers from the wing...
For a bit of context this was Utd's top goalscorers last year…
1 Robin van Persie 13 20
2 Wayne Rooney 11 23
3 Danny Welbeck 7 16
4 Javier Hernandez 4 17
5 Antonio Valencia 3 24
6 Adnan Januzaj 3 17
7 Patrice Evra 2 25
8 Chris Smalling 2 20
9 Phil Jones 2 22
10 Ashley Young 2 16
So he got more than Hernandez & 4 less goals than Rooney despite playing 7 less games, being stuck on the wing and often used as a sub. Completely outscored all their other wingers too - not bad at all...

I agree with you about a play maker but there aren't any available that are anywhere close to as good as Welbeck, IMHO. It takes time to build a strong squad - you have to bring in good players as they become available.'Only a Ranger!' cried Gandalf. Remy and Welbeck would be too similar if that was ever to happen.

It's all well and good providing goalscoring stats etc. but they are skewed at a club like United - he probably gets half a dozen good chances a game. With us he may only get one or two, and from what I've seen from him he is far from clinical.....I'm also not convinced that is an area of his game that will improve all that much throughout the rest of his career either.
In terms of him only needing to be better than Charlie Austin - in theory I agree, but then again there is nothing to suggest that Austin won't score 10-15 goals this season (the same as Wellbeck's average over his United career.)

"The third most clinical striker is Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck. Welbeck has gained a reputation for his lack of goal scoring, but when given the opportunity to play upfront this season in the absence of Robin Van Persie, Welbeck managed to convert 31% of his chances. Although he has only scored 8 goals this season, this is an impressive statistic.
[...]
Second in the clear-cut-chance conversion list is Danny Welbeck. He has had a CCC rate of 70% which compliments his high chance conversion rate of 31%. Of Welbeck’s 8 goals, 7 came from chances which were clear-cut. This shows that Welbeck has been an extremely clinical finisher this season, perhaps the most clinical in the Premier League."

A clear-cut chance is the same, whether you're playing for Man U or Burnley.
And Charlie Austin would get approximately 0 goals a season at Man United as he'd get laughed out of training for his shocking touch and wouldn't ever make an appearance.
