I would like this problem settled one way or the other. If he doesn't want to sign a new contract (without the release clause) then I think we are better off without him. Otherwise every transfer period we are going to have to go through the same scenario as to whether he wants to stay or not and not knowing whether on transfer deadline day he will be gone. You really can't plan like that.

Ray Wilkins has gone on record as saying he knew that selling your best player would hurt (Les Ferdinand) but what he had not realised was that it would relegate us. OK we cd argue that his shockingly bad signings - way worse than anything Mark Hughes ever did - played a big part in that but think our chances of staying up are as closely tied to keeping hold of Remy as they were then to keeping Ferdinand. Would love to be proved wrong but just don't see us having the nous and the skill and pulling power - let alone the sheer cash - to get a player of comparable ability.

Stainrod, completely agree...you can already see the similarities in our fortunes between the current team with Remy and the team of the mid 90's with Ferdinand (another top class striker who we sold cheaply, albeit in different circumstances.) There is no question that our chances of being relegated will rise dramatically if Remy goes....no other club who will be in the bottom 6 or 7 has a 15-20 goal a season striker on their books, which gives us a huge advantage. It would be typical Chelsea to **** us up by putting our best player on their bench.
