the wingbacks are the most influential players in the 3-5-2 formation. They need to be quick in transition from attack to defence and vice versa, pretty much dominating their wing, allowing the 3 in the middle to control the ball and effectively control the game. Wouldnt be surprised to see harry bring in another specialised wing back, especially on the left

Why hasn't Traore been playing - is he injured? As others have said seems a no brainer to me that he starts if we are playing wing backs.

I agree with the OP I think SWP has been very good and lively pre season

I totally agree and cannot understand why he has featured so much in pre season.
If playing 3 CBs the wing backs will play a vital role, so for me they would be Isla and Yun or Traore.

Did you watch yesterday? Thought he was complete and utter tripe and I'm a supporter of him

All of the wide players together delivered so little last season it is no surprise the club is looking to make changes there.

Traore/Hoilett/SWP/Phillips record of goalscoring + assists + even crosses last season was poor and for a group of supposedly top flight players playing in the championship they were not value for money.

Yep all be it on the net. Got forward more then anyone else and done more then is share of getting back. suppose it all depends on what expectations are and if some people and blinkered because they have taken a dislike to a player and therefore refuse to see whats going on currently

There were many worse players on the pitch yesterday then SWP

I'd like to see Yun on the left. He's not as quick as Traore but he still has a decent turn of pace and when he's been on the pitch he's done a fair job of getting up and down the flank. Probably the most balanced choice in that position.

Agree with this post..Yun must be given a chance as Traore has had plenty of games to show what he can do...if Dunne does play left of a three at the back, then he needs some protection in front of him..Traore goes AWOL in games too often for my liking.

I'm sure everyone will get game time. Traore is underrated IMO, often shows up when it counts. Simpson is just not good enough!

Out of interest, what's the based upon? He was arguably our most consistent performer last season.
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Dan was solid as the proverbial last year....

Out of the two playing wingback yesterday SWP offered a whole lot more going forward. IMO he had a good game and he'll only get better the more he plays.

Was always the weak link at Newcastle, he's a good Championship player but nothing more. Our solid defence from last year is gonna be much more shaky this year/..

Good enough defensively, but not offensively, which probably limits the contribution he can make as a wing back (as opposed to an orthodox right back, where he'd be fine). A shame. Still am important member of the squad.
