  • Nedum Onuoha & Formations for Next Season

With the signing of Rio seeming impending and Harry confirming that we're still after Caulker, what's going to happen with Onuoha. Cannot see any of the three of them willing to sit on the bench and we all know that Nedum is much more assured at centre back than right back. There could be a change in system whereby we play 3 centre backs and 2 wing backs as the Dutch did at the World Cup, but then I don't think that a right wing back position would suit Danny Simpson as personally I feel he's not great at going forward and crossing. The system also means you play without wingers, which doesn't suit us when we have the likes of Matty Phillips and Hoilett.
I know Rio would only be here for a season and is unlikely to play every game, but then again we do still have Hill, Dunne and Donaldson as further options for centre back.
    Thoughts?

If Rio can only play 15-20 games, the 3 will just rotate I guess. I dont like Nedum at RB at all.

Rio and Ned will share the role and neither will moan when on the bench for whatever reason imho.

If we managed to get Caulker,, I'd be tempted to play 3-5-2, Ned-Rio-Caulker
I came here to chew gum and kick ass,and I'm all outta gum!

Onuoha and Caulker would be fine for me.
I don't like the signal HR is sending to Ned - next season is all about Ferdinand teaching Caulker how to play

I wouldn't worry too much about how many games players will get, who haven't even joined us yet!

My gut feeling is Rio will join and Caulker won't - hope I'm wrong

Rio, Dunne and Hill will have some fitness issues, probably the odd suspension, etc, etc - this these things have a way of sorting themselves out

If we sign caulker and rio, ned will be 3rd choice imo. Is really harsh as came on leaps and bounds but Caulker is the better player hands down and a lot of you will see that IF he signs for us.
I really cant see rio playing 38 games, then you got to add in form and injuries throughout the season plus cup games so ned will get plenty of chances to play imo and cant see it being a problem.
I think ned will want the opportunity to play and learn from rio as much as anyone and healthy competition is what you need at a club. It will be great for us to have 3 high quality defenders going for 2 spots it keeps everyone on top of their game.
I would change form a back four personally but thats just me.

Im more optimistic then ever that caulker will sign now. If palace really did get the upper hand I think he would of gone to them by now. Genuinely believe he's been waiting for the rio deal to get over line. Think that plays a massive part of him wanting to come to the club. Imagine as a 22 year old getting the chance to partner rio in defence for a season rather than someone like delaney.

Ned is quality and was arguably our best player in the last 4 or 5 games (at least) last season. Would be very harsh on him not getting a start next season.

Also, who's to say that Ned couldnt go on to be better than Caulker from learning from Rio?

I know what your saying mate...I rate ned very highly, good pro and was solid for us last year. But watch caulker if he plays for us and your see it straight away. I remmebr when walker came on loan to us and the first game I saw him play live, I turned to my mate and said he'll play for england soon and be back at spurs as their number 1 rb.
Caulker's the same he wont ever be as good as ferdinand but I reckon he could quicky go on and dismiss jagielka from a england spot. Hes got a lot of qualities like Ferdinand had. Quick, athletic and very good on the ball, also pops up with a few goals. Long term I actually reckon ned and caulker could be a great combination.

Yeah, I remember Walker playing for us - absolute different class at the time.

Can agree with you on Caulker and Ned being long term for us should Caulker sign. Just hope Ned is happy as there is already interest in him...think Villa were sniffing.

Seriously Maids, I've not seen a lot of him - is he really as good as you suggest? If so, can't wait to see him IF it happens

We need 2 younger CBs for the future. Ned is one. It's better if another young Cb comes in now while the oldies still are here.

Yeah mate, I really believe so...I mean we cant forget he's 22 so he's still learning and consistency in performances will come in age. Dont expect a complete package but the raw ability and talent is there for all to see when you watch him.
I really think when you see him play more will be where im at atm with ned. That yes hes a great player really rate the lad, but when you compare them both your go for caulker every team. Dont let cardiff getting relegate fall you of this boys potential and abillity. Remy is example of a stand out player in a team relegated.
Its why I got so frustrated with the palace story and have been so passionate about this signing. TBH im very surprised a top 6 team are not nicking him. I think everton would if they had that sort of money.
