Don't think Rio's ability can be questioned but am worried about his fitness.

We need our top players to be available for as many games as poss

Rio had a back issue 5 years ago which caused him issues and resulted in him only making 21 appearances and as there were some recurrences early on, suddenly people have tagged him as "injury Prone". However, over the last 5 seasons including that year, and last season when Moyes rarely picked him he's averaged 29 games a year. What that doesn't take into account are the games he's fit and available and just not selected, as was the case with Moyes last year. SO he's easily been available for selection for well over 30 games on average a season for years even though supposedly so injury prone....

What you also need to bear in mind when he had niggling injuries, is that he was playing for Man Utd and England so had games Sunday, Tuesday, Saturday, Wednesday etc etc, and then internationals. That in itself isn't such an issue for a squad player, but because he was so important they probably tried to rush him back on occasions for massively important matches, and he had reoccurrences as a result. At QPR if he signs, it will be chalk and cheese just playing weekends with proper recovery time and then regular 2 week breaks during international matches.

Anyone doubting he will be a major asset will be pleasantly surprised i'm sure.

No idea how much he will be earning if the deal goes through and neither does any one else, since at the time of writing contract detail have not been revealed. I have a feeling he could be an excellent defence coach. I'm not convinced about him being week in week out EPL these days. His contract should, imo, reflect that. Erm... thats it.

I doubt he will be a better coach than Hill

No pun. but EVEN I can understand that Rio is planned brought in to partly supervise or say inspire Caulker and Nedum. If he will be able to play more than 15 matches that will be a bonus.

If you really are that clueless to need to ask such a question.... just because someone has plenty of worth for a year, doesn't mean they are worth a 3 year contract. It's not rocket science, but clearly not simple enough for some.
You really don't understand do you? Let me spell it out nice and plain for you so even YOU can grasp it.

By suggesting he's only worth a year's deal clearly shows you have doubts about his longevity. What then? He's finished at the top level? Why only worth one year instead of two or three? The end for him could come sooner than you think. It is this risk that I think is too great for us. He is NOT the same player he was. Even YOU can accept that FFS. You're buying into his past, not his present and future.

Still, I will eat humble pie if he plays 25-30 prem games for us, but I have doubts. I expect you to do likewise if he doesn't.

Rio brought in on 30 - 40 k week basic with incentives for performance is a fantastic deal for this club. Get rio playing 20 games this year against our rivals and we have such a huge asset.
Rio could be the reason we sign someone like caulker too.
                      Spot on.

So what is an acceptable number of games, we should expect from this world class defender who's fit and raring to go?

What planet are you on! He's 35, nearly 36, so regardless whether I feel he's worth a contract or not, it obviously wouldn't be prudent from a business respective to offer him a 2 or 3 year contract! It's a pointless argument.

We all know the general career longevity of footballers, and know he's near the end of his career so we don't need you acting like an arrogant ar5e on the forum to tell us that, thanks. That's why people are saying a 1yr deal FFS. If he does well and the club want to roll it beyond that so be it.

Oh, and how am I making judgements based on the past exactly? If you actually read my posts in the thread I made the point of saying obviously he's not as good as he used to be but if he's even 70% of the player he was, he'd still improve our squad.
