Tactically saying genius is very daft but it was very very clever.

Bringing on a keeper with 1 minute of extra time to go must of blown the Costa Rica players minds. They must of been thinking sh!t he must be an expert penalty saver when really he's probably as good as the other guy. He got into their minds and gave them that 1% doubt & coupled with Krul's goading of them which he should have been booked for it worked.

Looking at it from a psychological point of view you're right that is a masterstroke

Only a master stroke because it worked, could very well have backfired on them

Could become the 'done thing' now in cup games......fresh mind and energy.

              Very clever.

And yet nobody would question bringing on a player who was great at taking pens..... Good move imo. His record for Newcastle isn't great, but clearly been better in training than the over keeper. Plus as mentioned will put doubt in opponents heads, and he's a lot bigger when jumping around in the goal so makes the goal appear smaller.... all good ideas in theory. It worked for them so job done.

Of course....ain't that the same with all decisions taken during a game? If he had put on another striker with pens nobody would be saying anything.
Bringing on BZ at Wembley.....Arry masterstroke
