  • QPR Get football dome in Cranford for Academy players

A football dome in Cranford for use by QPR's academy players and members of public has been given the green light.

The new artificial pitch and inflatable covering in the grounds of Cranford Community College are set to be completed by September after getting the nod from councillors at last night's (Thursday, June 27) planning committee meeting.

The temporary dome has planning permission for the next three years but even if it goes after that, the 3G pitch would remain and QPR has promised to run clubs and coaching sessions at the site for at least five years.

The indoor space is needed for use by youth players in QPR's academy while a permanent training facility is built at Warren Farm in neighbouring Ealing.

The Cranford Superdome, as it is being called, would be used by the premiership side's academy players on weekday evenings and in the mornings at weekends.

Outside these hours, it will be available for use by pupils at Cranford Community College and other schools in the borough, as well as by nearby residents.

The club's charity QPR in the Community Trust has promised to create four new community clubs for 12-19 year-olds, offering professional coaching in football, table tennis, basketball and tennis.

The dome will also host free coaching sessions and inter-school competitions for local primary schools.

Cranford Community College will deliver the educational side of the QPR Academy programme, and, in return, sports scientists and nutritionists from QPR will work with GCSE students at the secondary school, in Cranford High Street.

Alan Fraser, deputy headteacher of Cranford Community College, said: "The building of the dome will create an iconic sport facility which will inspire young people to engage in sports and activity. We are also delighted with the community programme which QPR in the Community Trust will deliver."

Covered pitch will be used by academy players from QPR and will also be available to local pupils and residents

I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most
