of course I can see why people are sceptical, why can't those same people see what Rio could bring to us, instead of being negative before he's even put on a shirt

Boswinga was not one of the main reasons Chelsea won trophies and Park was more of squad player - Rio was integral to United's success and imo there is no comparison in mentality and attitude

What can he bring us that Dunne & Hill cant ?

We will be fighting relegation not challenging for anything which is what Ferdinand has done the last 6 years

He might turn out to be a decent signing but are you not sick and tired of the clubs short term signings ?

In the past, yes. Could never see the benefit of a Luke Young type player who was never better than bang average. Or the likes of Bosingwa, who were good once but were never bothered about us in the slightest. Or loans such as BAE or Benayoun.

Got a feeling that Ferdinand has a better character and a bit of pride in his performances. Would benefit the club as a whole with his experience and is possibly doing what he feels is the decent thing too, seeing as Harry brought him through as a kid. Just have to reserve judgement and see how it all pans out, but for me, especially after last season and the way it ended, I'm happy to give things a bit of time at least.

Just as I'm sure you will be delighted if you turn out to be wrong on this.

by the way, when new players join, none of us know exactly how they're going to perform

SWP, Barton, Green, Young, Nelsen, Dunne, Onouha, Cisse, Zamora, Johnson, Samba, Remy, Green, Cesar, Yun, etc, etc

Some prove to be good signings and assets, some don't

surely we have to support new players and give them a chance

if they cr ap then fair enough, we can criticise but surely not before they've ever played for us

Come on Fish, you're a good poster but surely you're wise enough to know that this is a message board forum where fans air their views.
I have no 'issue' with some fans not wanting Rio. I am a big fan of his but I am also unsure whether this is the right move because of his age. I will give the bloke my support but people can certainly question it. Harry isn't perfect mate, although I can clearly see you are a big fan. He has made some proper clangers of signings and he will definitely make plenty more.

Many clubs make short term signings, even the top clubs (arsenal- Campbell 2nd time, united-blanc/larsson etc) so i wouldn't panic.

I agree with this. In the scramble to stay up because of the money involved I can't see the trend slowing either. I think TF wants to do the right (long term) thing but it is a bit chicken and egg in that you need to fund it I the short term.
