  • Whys do people assume Young = Hungry

Hear it an awful lot on this forum that we need young hungry players and that's used as an example to not sign the likes of Rio

But why do we assume if a player is young, lets say under 25, that this means they are any hungrier then an older player

Agree west, David Bentley wasn't hungry was he....Neil Warnock showed us we need a mixture of young and old players....Btw I'd say Joey Barton is a hungry player

Down to the scouts to profile any player we target.

Personality, interests outside of football, family man? Etc etc

Plenty of youngsters that think they have already made it and strut around the pitch like they are gods gift to football when in reality they have done nothing yet.

Although you and I have differing views on signing Ferdinand, I agree with you that young doesn't necessarily equate to "hungry". A young player might use us as a stepping stone, whereas an older player may be looking for a big final pay day.
Supporting QPR isn't just about a football team. It's about roots and identity.

Had this row about 600 times now and agree all day West. The one player who's probably treated us worse than any other in recent times is Adel Taarabt. Now then, someone enlighten me, how old is he?
And then to spin it totally, our 3 outstanding players over past 3 seasons were Derry, Nelsen and Hill. Again, how old are these?

Very good original post it's all about the players character and nothing to do with age. Would use Ferdinand as a good example of a player who might struggle with injuries but certainly wouldn't be lacking in either quality or application and like those older players mentioned above would be an excellent signing.

Im not sold either way with Rio if honest Rich. Can see the pros and cons of signing someone like him. If we did I would not moan but equally if we never I would not loose any sleep over it

An older player may be after a final payday but equally they could turn out like Hill who in the twilight of his career saw it as one last chance before hanging up his boots and wants to make the most of it same applies to Nelson and to some extent Dunne. As said above we can protect ourselves against the payday players by doing our homework on them and same applies to younger players

If we did get Rio I think it would be ignorance to assume a guy who has been England Captain and one of the most decorated English players in our history would want to undo all that for one final pay day in Shepherds Bush we cannot base all our opinions on experienced players on that of Bosingwa etc
