Think you might be surprised what sort of wages these players are on, in 2011/2012 the average premier league wage was 30k. Remember that includes all professional players at premier league with a lot of the younger ones on substantially less. That will also have increased dramatically in the last two years so your 40k for Williams is probably a little low. As stated the wages I quoted were estimates but fact is we are a small club with gates of 18k if we pay what we took through the turn style we would be relegated before Xmas.

We've been here before, in the words of the joey baron: "we can't be a club where good players come to die anymore".
Figures are estimates and for example only, see above re Williams wages or those of any other prem player and for the record there is only 2years between Lescott and Williams. Re Barton's comment it's not the age of the player it's their attitude and if you think we will survive in the prem with solely young players with potential then good luck. What you need is a balance between young potential and experience.

Absolutely agree re over paying but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and Lescott is a better bet on all fronts than Williams who would be 34 when his contract comes to an end.

In fairness you are damned if you do and damned if you don't - if we had a decent youth set up or had come up with a young, hungry squad then we would be in an easier position. Really good young English players start at about £20m. Yet go into the Prem with Clint Hill and Richard Dunne - great tho they have been for us - and we will be on the receiving end of some cricket scores. So we are too conservative and we go down - if we are too wild we will be saddled with crazy debt and might still go down. Who would run a football club!

We just cant afford these 70 or 80 k a week wages with our 18 k capacity - I cant believe clubs like palace, hull, wba, swansea, burnley, leicester and relegated clubs like cardiff,Norwich were averaging paying players 40 k a week. I imagine the majority of them were on 20 - 30 with a few exceptions and we need to be somewhere around there maybe pushing 40 k.
we ran before we could walk last time and it f00ked us - must be more sensible this time.

No news yousef - in my view, there is no substance to this story. We are going to be linked with loads of players because of the clubs recent reputation in the transfer market, getting promoted and having Harry as our manager. Take it all with a pinch of salt!

Good to hear from you mate.

But the media now know will no longer continue the old approach. So they better stop linking us to the likes of Rio FErdinand, Glen Johnson and Lesscot.

true. The aim has to be to get some younger players, but also experienced older ones and pay the Premiership wages that go with them. this is to keep the club up whilst develing the youth and scouting set ups and buildinmg the new training ground and stadium.

It will be very costly, but that is the only way for the club given that it is playing catch-up, due to years of neglect and lack of money.

Tango and Cash had the opportunity to start all of this 4 or 5 seasons ago, but in truth were never really interested.

Gate money is only a fraction of the club's total income. EVERY premiership club can afford to have some players on 50/60k, you just have to be sensible.

The problem is not overpaying but spending wisely. Southampton splashed out when they went up with us but they spent wisely, and now they'll make a nice profit on those players they took a risk on. We squandered our cash on players who were past it on high wages. Instead of Samba, Park, Zamora and AJ we could've got some very good players.

As for Williams, he's had injury problems and has never been a great defender. He's prone to errors and plays in a Swansea team that defends from the front, which is opposite to how we've played under Arry. Rejected a new deal at Swansea cos he wants a wage hike, probably knowing this is his last chance for a big contract. Can see this going like the Samba deal did….

Don't think you can compare Williams to Samba. Totally different personalities.

As per the above post, our gate receipts represent a small fraction of potential revenue so not sure why people say we couldnt afford to pay players £40k/week..... out of interest, doesnt the bottom side in the coming season rake in £60m..... for simplicity and arguments sake, if that alone was divided among a 25 man squad it equates to £46k / week. Obvioulsy it isnt that straightforward, but just demonstrates how silly the money has become in the prem......

Possibly the problem is, we already have a few on higher Prem wages. Green, Barton, Granero, Cesar, Hoilett, I'd imagine Nedum is on decent whack too...how many more is TF willing to sanction?

I aint going to pretend I know all about ffp which is in play now and does have consequences but Im sure alot of it is based on gate receipts alongside sponsorship deals and tv money.
So the gates are quite important as far as im aware as compared to other clubs with 30 + k gates they probably generate more money and are therefore entitles to spend more money.
Again thats what i'm led to believe not 100 % sure how accurate that is. I've got most of that from papers and online articles.

It's about revenue a club makes, it doesn't specify how. Gate receipts form part of that. Then it's not as simple as looking at capacity because clubs having different pricing policies also, hence Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea probably don't make huge amounts less than Man Utd on gate receipts because their average ST prices are much higher.
